Like any major city, accommodation in Chicago is rarely cheap, but that doesn’t mean that value for money and relative bargains can’t be found. Spread across a number of the most popular neighborhoods in the city, these are 12 of the cheapest hotels to bear in mind for your next visit to Chicago.
To stay in the Loop for a reasonably cheap amount, you need to compromise a little. The HI Chicago Hostel has private rooms that are significantly cheaper than a hotel room—that is if you are okay with using a shared bathroom. Rooms start at $119 a night. Located on Congress between State and Wabash, you can’t get much closer to Buckingham Fountain, the Art Institute and many more of the city’s most popular attractions.
If sharing a bathroom is one step too far, but you still want to stay in the heart of the city, the nearby Travelodge is your best bet for the cheapest hotel in the area. Rooms are available from $139 a night, and the hotel has amenities including free WiFi and laundry facilities. Staying downtown ensures easy access to the whole of the city.
A short walk from the legendary Wrigley Field and in the middle of one of the city’s most lively and happening neighborhoods, the City Suites Chicago is a great option for exploring the north side of Chicago. If you book far in advance and pre-pay, rooms are available for less than $100, a great deal for a well-connected area with all kinds of great things to see and do within walking distance.
If you’re in town visiting the University of Chicago, Hyde Park’s Chicago Lake Shore Hotel is an excellent budget option. As you’d expect from the name, it sits right next to the beautiful shoreline of Lake Michigan. As well as the university, there are lots of reasons to visit Hyde Park, including great museums, shops, and restaurants. Rooms at the Lake Shore Hotel start at around $75 per night.
The Magnificent Mile is one of the most highly sought-after places to stay in the city, with stunning architecture, plenty of restaurants and some of the best shopping in the country. That doesn’t mean you have to break the bank to stay there though, with rooms at the Red Roof Inn starting at $120.99 a night. Less than a block off the mile, it’s actually closer than many expensive hotels in the area.
The Chicago Getaway Hostel lies in the upmarket Lincoln Park neighborhood. As well as great connections to the city, Lincoln Park has many great attractions within walking distance of the hostel. The free Lincoln Park Zoo is always great for travelers on a budget, as is the rest of the park. One of the city’s best blues clubs, Kingston Mines, is also only a short walk away. Private rooms with an en-suite bathroom start at around $65 a night.
If you don’t mind a short journey into the city, then the Carlton Inn Midway at Chicago Midway Airport is another great budget option. It’s only a short drive or train ride into the city, less than half an hour for each. Rooms start at around $100 depending on your needs, and there’s free parking, a free airport shuttle, complimentary breakfast, and WiFi.
In an excellent location on Washington and Wabash in the Loop, The Pittsfield Hotel: Apartments and Suites has a number of room options for reasonable prices, including studios and one- and two-bedroom apartments. A studio can begin at around $125 a night, but for such a convenient location, close to Millennium Park and the Chicago River, it’s a price that’s hard to beat.
Rooms at the Best Western River North Hotel start at $170.10 per night, but you’re paying for a great location in the heart of the city and hotel amenities including an indoor heated pool, fitness center, and a rooftop deck with stunning views of the Chicago skyline. And it’s still significantly cheaper than most hotels in the area.
The Inn at Lincoln Park is not far from the busy intersection of Clark, Broadway, and Diversey, being well connected to both the bustling Lake View neighborhood to the north and beautiful Lincoln Park to the south. There are lots of room and suite options in this historic, European-style hotel dating back to 1918, with prices starting at $89. Amenities include complimentary breakfast and WiFi and convenient parking.
In town for a ballgame? The Majestic is a surprisingly affordable boutique hotel in the desirable east side of Lake View, perfectly located for a trip to Wrigley Field, with the stadium just a 15-minute walk away. If baseball isn’t your thing, you’re still in a great part of town, right by the Lake and well connected to the rest of the city. Rooms start at $79 a night.
The Jaslin Hotel is in Chinatown near the South Loop area. Chinatown itself is full of things to do, and conveniently located near McCormick Place and Museum Campus as well. The hotel is clean and modern with good amenities, with rooms starting at $71, and you can book in advance to receive up to 20% off the published rate. For its proximity to the Loop, the price is very good.
