Steer clear of the party resorts and tourist hordes, and Mallorca offers numerous couples-friendly spots throughout the island. From gorgeous mountain-top mansions to swish urban boltholes, we’ve compiled a list of our favourite hotels on the island for a romantic getaway.

Formentor, a Royal Hideaway Hotel

This vintage five-star hotel has been a favourite with romancing couples since Grace Kelly and the Prince of Monaco honeymooned here in 1956, and it’s easy to see why. Dating from the twenties – and attracting various celebrities through the years – the hotel brims with old-school charm and romance. The setting is particularly swoon-inducing, set in the picturesque peninsular of Formentor, surrounded by scented pine forests and overlooking one of Mallorca’s prettiest beaches. Ask for suite 322, aka the Grace Kelly Suite, for some extra romantic vibes.

Pleta de Mar

Opened in 2017, the seriously upscale Pleta de Mar is one of the most recent additions to the island, and a real gem for couples looking for secluded chic. The hotel’s two infinity pools are nestled among olive trees and scented pine woodland overlooking Mallorca’s eastern coast, plus a child-free environment to really enjoy the serenity. The 30 luxury suites are scattered throughout the grounds with high-end amenities such as B&O stereos and L’Occitane toiletries – couples can really blow the budget on a top-end suite featuring sea-view hot tubs for two.

Castell Son Claret

This luxury boutique hotel only opened its doors in 2013, but has established itself as one of the island’s finest – especially for romancing couples. The building itself is a former castle with its roots in the 15th century and set in extensive grounds from where guests can soak up the gorgeous surrounding Mallorcan landscape. Its 38 rooms are individually and immaculately styled, with top-end accommodation offering private gardens with pools, or for a more quirky stay there’s a circular duplex room converted from an ancient water tower. A panoramic swimming pool, deluxe spa, and the only two Michelin star restaurant in the Balearics complete a super-swanky – and uber-romantic – package.

Son Brull Hotel and Spa

Housed in a restored 18th-century jesuit monastery, the Son Brull Hotel and Spa expertly combines the charming historic architecture with some gorgeous 21st-century design. The rural setting is also pretty special nestled among vineyards, lavender and lemon orchards in the foothills of the Tramontana sierra. Couples can luxuriate in a lovely teakwood spa and enjoy some of the finest dining on the island by candlelight – mostly from produce grown on the surrounding farmland. As top-end romantic rustic retreats go, it doesn’t get much better than this.

Hospes Maricel Mallorca

An iconic landmark hotel since the fifties, the Hospes Maricel Mallorca still exhibits plenty of palatial glamour and old-school romance.  The property occupies a centuries-old neo-classical mansion and swish contemporary additions, plus terrace and an infinity pool directly overlooking the sea. Most of the 51 rooms and suites offer superb sea views, some from even from private plunge pools – making the perfect spot for a romantic soak for two while the sun goes down.

Hotel Astoria Playa

Voted the number one adults-only hotel on the island by TripAdvisor users, Hotel Astoria Playa is certainly an outstanding option for loved-up couples. There are two fabulous swimming pools and several jacuzzis to soak in à deux, while whirlpool tubs for two can also be enjoyed from the privacy of top-level suites. You can also choose from several packages to add the likes of sparkling wines, chocolates, and even ‘sensual sets’ for a little extra romantic zhoosh during your stay.

Hotel Sant Francesc

Set in the quieter side of Palma’s richly historic old town, the Hotel Sant Francesc oozes effortless style from its beautiful period-chic reception to its gorgeous rooftop terrace overlooking the eponymous church. Most of the original neoclassical features of this 19th-century mansion have been meticulously restored, but with a light contemporary touch that makes for eye-pleasing results. But it’s not all aesthetics, with an outstanding fine dining restaurant, high-tech in-room amenities, and a rooftop swimming pool with poolside sushi bar that puts the icing on one very luxurious cake.
