The capital of Western Australia, Perth, is often overlooked for Sydney and Melbourne, yet it has masses of charm, a compelling history and a dazzling coastline. The city is full of museums, independent shops, hip new bars and top-notch boutique hotels and is loved for its year-round sunshine and booming food and craft-beer scenes. From 19th-century pubs to restored government buildings, these are the best places to stay in Perth.

The focus at this trendy hotel, from the names behind the popular Little Creatures Brewery in Fremantle, is on colourful, bohemian spaces, where guests are encouraged to work and relax together. There’s a lobby espresso bar, a rooftop terrace overlooking the skyline, a wine bar and a dining room and a comfy lounge with a record player, velvet sofas and shelves stuffed with books to borrow.

Elsewhere, there are two restaurants including the top-floor farm-to-table Wildflower and an immaculate COMO Shambhala Urban Escape day spa, with a 20m (66ft) heated indoor pool and treatment rooms.

These 22 upmarket serviced apartments are every bit as swish as a hotel room but allow you to feel a little more at home, with a fully equipped kitchen, muted tactile decor, a work desk and laundry facilities. Sadly, we can’t promise washing your socks will feel any more glamorous here, though.
