Giving new life to structures that had fallen into disrepair and were no longer used, there are a total of 45 pieces to choose from, so you can enjoy fresh air, art, and Mexico without paying a penny.

CINEMA | Exhibition About The Humor Of Mexican Cinema

Mexicans love to show off their so-called unique sense of humor, and anyone vaguely interested in how that is conveyed on the silver screen needs to head down to El Humor en el Cine Mexicano at the Cineteca Nacional this month. Curated by Rafael Barajas, its biggest draws will be the films focusing on the comics Cantinflas and Tin Tan.

ART | Diego Rivera: Re-visiones de Norteamérica

Globally recognized as one of the most influential Mexican artists and muralists, this exhibition of some of Diego Rivera’s interesting and culturally revealing pieces at Museo Mural Diego Rivera is more than worth a visit. Focusing on his influence on the modern art scene in the US, the pieces have been curated by his grandson.

FOOD | Chow Down On Enchiladas In Iztapalapa

Everyone loves food, so what better way to spend the first week of September than at an enchilada festival in Iztapalapa? This most emblematic of Mexican foods can be found in all its mouthwatering forms in Jardín Cuitláhuac, along with salsas and a Guinness World Record attempt; the hope is to make a 130-meter-long enchilada.

HISTORY | A Monologue About Maximilian of Habsburg

History lovers will revel in this monologue, which supposedly reveals a different side of Maximilian of Habsburg. Rumors surrounded his life and death, but this event seeks the truth in the gloom of gossip, playing out his final few hours of life in the grand Castillo de Chapultepec.

DANCE | A Dance Show For All The Senses

POETRY | Lila Downs Poetry Recital In Support Of Indigenous Voices

A costly but culturally fascinating event takes place this September in Museo de la Ciudad de México. Organized by Lila Downs, this poetry recital and musical event focuses on indigenous Mexican artists and is a precursor to a larger event in October. FASHION | Check Out The Balenciaga Exhibit

Fashion fans need look no further this September than this Balenciaga exhibit, which runs into the first few days of the month. Hosted by the Museo de Arte Moderno and curated by the ex-director of Spain’s Museoa Cristóbal Balenciaga, the show includes examples of this influential label’s dresses as well as photography. Stand-out pieces include María Felix’s Estrella Vacía dress.

If you’re still feeling fresh the following day, head back to Palacio de los Deportes to see Mexican favorites Molotov play live. Known for causing controversy with their politically charged and often less-than-subtle songs, see them on their home turf where they formed over 20 years ago and enjoy their trademark musical style.

CONCERT | Life In Color Festival Returns

Combine art and music at this exciting paint festival, which is returning to Mexico this September for the third year running. MUSIC | Mexican Favorites Porter Play Mexico City

A more tranquil option than the aforementioned Molotov, Guadalajara natives Porter are also playing in Mexico City this September. Head down to the Teatro Metropólitano in the historic center for what’s sure to be an interesting concert. The group’s unconventional style has earned it a diverse and devoted following since it formed in 2004, and its success has endured despite the departure of their lead singer, Juan Son.

SPORT | Red Bull Soapbox Race

For an action-packed and sure-to-be-entertaining Sunday, go and watch the official Red Bull Soapbox race in Mexico City. The location is yet to be confirmed but the date is set for September 11th. Bar Nostalgia plays host to a dance and cabaret extravaganza this month, tackling the theme of violence in society and why such pleasure is derived from it. Making use of dualities, optical illusion, and metaphor, the beautiful and the macabre will be explored in this show directed by Marisol Cal y Mayor.

THEATER | Improvised Theater At Its Finest With Conejo Blanco, Conejo Rojo

Produced by José Manuel López Velarde, Conejo Blanco, Conejo Rojo is a masterpiece in improvisational theater in which the actors have no idea what they’ll be performing until the curtain rises. They simply open an envelope on the night. What’s more, it features scheduled performances by some of Mexico’s finest talents, including Ximena Sariñana. This showing will feature Héctor Suárez Gomís.

SPORT | Unleash The Child Within At InflaRun

Who doesn’t love an opportunity to be a kid again? That’s exactly what InflaRun will give you this September in Mexico City. This inflatable obstacle course and run will be held at the Infield Hipódromo de las Ámerica and gives participants the chance to run five kilometers and scale ten different obstacles.

THEATER | Shakespeare in Mexico With Measure For Measure

Shakespeare can and should be enjoyed in all languages, so why not head down to this staging of Measure for Measure (Medida Por Medida) at Teatro Julio Castillo. Known as one of the difficult comedies, somberness rules even though the characters enjoy themselves throughout. The Mexican flavor is pervasive in this play, as it takes place not in Vienna but in Bar Viena.
