Early November in Mexico City sees the arrival of Day of the Dead celebrations, and the rest of the month has plenty of exciting activities on offer too. Here’s what’s on in November.

Throughout November, the Museo Universitario del Chopo will be playing host to famed Mexican photographer Graciela Iturbide’s work. The exhibition is to celebrate 45 years of the Festival Rock y Ruedas, at which she took her first tentative steps into the photography world. As well as the photos, there will be an audio-visual room displaying videos from the 1971 festival.

CULTURE | Soak Up Some Day Of The Dead Culture In La Roma

Day of the Dead is one of Mexico’s biggest nationwide celebrations and is honoured around the world. On November 1st, head to La Roma and check out the altars that will be adorning this so-called cultural corridor as part of La Catrina Fest MX festivities. This makes for a great way to see a snapshot of real Mexican culture.

ART | Last Chance To See Anish Kapoor At The MUAC

📅 Tuesday, November 1st – Sunday, November 27th

This extremely popular, critically exclaimed and truly excellent exhibition will continue through November 27th. That means this month is your last chance to see the intriguing, abstract work of British-Indian sculptor Anish Kapoor. You’re probably already familiar with some of his work though – he designed Chicago’s Bean sculpture.

THEME PARK | Get Scared Silly At Six Flags’ Fright Fest

What better way to celebrate the festive period than by visiting Six Flag’s theme park’s Fright Fest? CULTURE | Check Out UNAM’s Megaofrenda In The Historic Centre

📅 Until Wednesday, November 2nd

The annual Megaofrenda, organised by the UNAM, is into its 19th year and shows no sign of slowing down or dropping in popularity. This year it will take place at Mexico City’s central zócalo, making it easily accessible for all. It will also be paying homage to Rufino Tamayo. Aside from the altars laden with ofrendas, there will be poetry competitions and dance shows.

FILM | See The Best The Morelia Film Fest Has To Offer

Although the world renowned Morelia Film Festival took place in October, throughout November select locations throughout Mexico City will be screening some of the stand out cinematic offerings from the festival. CULTURE | An Anime And Mango Convention Hits Mexico City

Manga and anime fans can’t pass up the opportunity to hit up Mexico City’s Anime and Manga Convention this November. The biggest of its kind in Latin America, it attracts fans of the Japanese art form from across the globe and the country. One of the absolute must-sees is the often spectacular cosplay that will be on show there.

PHOTOGRAPHY | Famed German Photographer Candida Höfer Exhibits In Mexico

Coming to a close on November 5th is the gorgeous photographic exhibition by German artist Candida Höfer. Hosted at La Roma’s Galería OMR, which is incidentally one of the best art galleries in Mexico City, you can check out some supersized versions of her rich and detailed shots of Bellas Artes and Teatro Juárez to name but a few.

SPORT | Do You Dare To Give This Night-time Zombie Race A Go?

If you’re not worn out after the manga and photography, why not try take part in the night time zombie race that will be taking place on Saturday evening just an hour outside Mexico City? With obstacles slowing you down as zombies chase you and attempt to take your life (not really, of course), you’ll be tested both mentally and physically. It’s all in good fun though.

CULTURE | Hello Kitty In Mexico City

The iconic Japanese cartoon character, Hello Kitty, will take pride of place as the star of her own exhibition at the MUJAM in Mexico City. Celebrating 42 years since her inception, this almost month long exhibition will be full of Hello Kitty memorabilia, live music and even workshops all related to the cult cat. Tickets must be bought in advance.

If you can’t make it to any of the other Catrina events that are on offer at the start of November, you should definitely try and make it to this one. An open-air photography exhibition, there will be various snaps of Mexico’s most famous tradition – that of dressing up as the Catrina figure, complete with full sugar skull make-up. You can even dress up as a Catrina yourself to really get into the spirit!

MUSIC | The Legend That Is Mariah Carey Performs In Mexico

FESTIVAL | Famed Mexican Festival Corona Capital Comes To Town

Corona Capital is one of Mexico’s best known and most iconic festivals, which predominantly features rock bands from both Mexico and across the world. ART | Take A Tour Of La Profesa’s Pinacoteca

As one of Mexico City’s top Catholic destinations, La Profesa (otherwise known as San Felipe Neri) is also home to an impressive Pinacoteca which displays a selection of oil paintings. With four rooms and over 350 works of art, there’s certainly plenty to do but it can be a little overwhelming. Taking part in this completely free tour is the best option, although it does only cover the first two rooms.

MUSIC | Chilean Ana Tijoux Performs In CDMX

One of Latin America’s best rappers, the Chilean Ana Tijoux, will be performing at Teatro de la Ciudad this month. With a wide selection of hits, such as ‘1977’, ‘Calaveritas’ and ‘Somos sur’, she’s an artist that you don’t have to be familiar with to enjoy. You might need to be familiar with Spanish to be able to sing along, but even if you’re not, the atmosphere is guaranteed to be great.
