With the millions of tourists that pour into Tenerife each year, it will come as no surprise that there are restaurant options to suit all tastes. And the perennial favourite, the pizzeria, is particularly well represented throughout the island, with wood-fired ovens, homemade dough and some traditional Italian expertise combining to create some great pizza. Here are the top places on the island.

Gusto Pizzeria Tenerife

With a reputation for speedy and super-friendly service, as well blindingly good pizzas, it’s no wonder that this small and genuinely Italian pizzeria is so popular. The pizza toppings are fresh and delicious, with tomato and non-tomato options on crispy bases, all cooked in authentic wood-fired pizza ovens. You can opt for regular-sized round pizzas or huge rectangular pizzas for sharing (though these pizzas are so good that sharing might be tricky). Even the antipasti platter has slices of pizza on it alongside the cold meats, olives and artichokes. For those with a sweet tooth, they offer a dessert pizza in the form of a calzone stuffed with Nutella and ricotta.

Pizzeria Rugantino

If you were to just stumble upon Pizzeria Rugantino, you’d be forgiven for thinking it was just a takeaway place. In fact there is a basic but decent-sized dining area out the back, which is pretty much always packed. A particularly good bet for families, there is an area for kids to don aprons and stretch and shape their own pizza dough, leaving the parents free to sample some great wines while waiting for their meal. Extremely popular with locals thanks to the friendly service, reasonable prices and consistently great pizza, so it is best to book ahead. Don’t be alarmed when you don’t receive any cutlery – you are fully expected to pick up a slice and eat with your fingers!

Fuoco & Pizza

Pizzeria, Italian

A large terrace out the front of what is otherwise a takeaway pizza joint serves as the restaurant area of Fuoco & Pizza. The rustic-looking pizzas themselves are often either misshapen or deliberately shaped into love hearts or other styles, but have tasty crusts on their wood-fired crispy bases and the usual range of toppings. The service is good and the prices reasonable.

Oro di Napoli Pizzeria

In a great location two minutes from the beach in Los Cristianos, Oro di Napoli might not be anything to write home about in terms of decor, but the pizzas are worth going back for time and time again. Offering authentic wood-fired bases with delicious toppings, all made using fresh ingredients, this small unassuming Italian restaurant is a great find.

Pizza y Pasta

Pizzeria, Italian

This Italian restaurant in Los Cristianos is small and unpretentious, with a handful of tables on the outdoor terrace. With friendly and attentive service, very good prices and tasty pizzas and homemade pastas, you can’t really go wrong here if you’re after a cheap and cheerful meal. A bonus is the fact that the dough is homemade using organic flour. If you have room for dessert, the tiramisu is particularly good.

La Grotta Azzura Pizzeria

Pizzeria, Italian

Tucked away in the heart of the popular Playa de las Americas resort, this straightforward and unpretentious pizzeria attracts a young and friendly crowd to its small alfresco terrace. While offering plenty of Italian-inspired dishes, it’s their delicious pizzas that really stand out: they’re freshly made with thin bases from homemade dough. Prices are very reasonable and there’s a takeaway option.

La Piazzetta

Pizzeria, Italian

Having opened its doors in 2014, La Piazzetta in Los Cristianos quickly established itself as one of the best places to eat pizza on the island. An impressive selection of pizzas are available, all cooked with quality handmade dough, topped with fresh ingredients and cooked in the wood-fired oven (built by experts from Naples from Italian materials). It’s understandably popular with both locals and tourists, and also serves some excellent Italian cooking and seafood options.
