Alcúdia, a medieval city in Mallorca, is a magnet for sun-seekers, with some of the best beach hotels just minutes from golden Balearic beaches and the old town – here are our top picks.

Visitors are drawn to Alcúdia for the medieval charm and proximity to some of the top beaches in Mallorca. Set between two bays, you’re spoilt for choice – with isolated coves and wide stretches of golden sand, not to mention a nature reserve, all within touching distance of Alcúdia. So, where to stay? Here’s our selection of the best beach hotels.

1. Hotel Fonda Llabrés

The Llabrés family has been running this atmospheric hotel since 1957, set in the ancient town centre just 15 minutes from the beach. Once a traditional pension frequented by merchants, the building has been refurbished into a boutique hotel with 21 rooms with original features such as tall french doors and balconies with a town-square view. Book into the fancy deluxe double for a private terrace with an outdoor shower.

2. Hotel Astoria Playa – Adults Only

Adults will love this calm, child-free resort that’s only a 5-minute stroll from the soft sands of Alcúdia Beach. There’s a chic, grown-up feel to Hotel Astoria, from the red-and-white design theme to the decked pool area dotted with Balinese beds perfect for lazing the afternoon away with a signature cocktail. Many of the rooms have their own Jacuzzi for a private soak, and, if you’re feeling active, there’s a cycling centre, where you can rent a bike or store your own.

Here, you’ll find tennis and squash courts, a putting green, a football pitch, as well as facilities for archery and cycling and a watersports centre. Then, there are six pools, including a semi-Olympic-sized gem, in which to get your laps. Unwind during a spa session with a turkish bath and treatments to soothe tired muscles. All this is set in the Albufereta nature reserve, a haven for birdlife, and there’s a free shuttle to Pollensa and Alcúdia beaches every day.

Experience a slice of old Alcúdia at Cas Ferrer, a 15th-century former blacksmith’s house set on a cobbled street 2,625ft (800m) from the beach. Everything at the property exudes history, from the tidal stone walls to the painted green shutters and city-view terraces.
