The coffee ritual is a time-honoured tradition in Naples, and it’s hard not to smell the sweet aroma of roasting beans as you wander through the piazzas. For a cup of delicious Neapolitan coffee, our local insiders spill the beans on where to go for the perfect caffeine buzz in the city.

1. Gran Caffè Mexico

Cafe, Mexican

The vibrant orange awning of Gran Caffè Mexico calls to those looking for a morning jolt of espresso to jumpstart a day touring the Centro Storico. The coffee is superb (some rate it the city’s best) and the baristas are always smiling. The coffee comes with sugar, so if you’d prefer yours unsweetened you can ask for your coffee without (just don’t be surprised if your no-sugar declaration causes murmurs from the staff). This gem is a must for anyone looking to soak up some Neapolitan cafe culture. Recommended by local insider Matt Barker

2. Gran Caffè Gambrinus

Cafe, Italian

Just around the corner from the Piazza del Plebiscito is one of Italy’s most celebrated, historic coffee spots. The Gran Caffè Gambrinus retains the air of a literary salon and art gallery (works still adorn the walls), with marbled floors and high, art nouveau-style ceilings that, like sirens, have called the area’s most elite intellectuals, writers, artists and politicians since the mid-1800s. Gran Caffè Gambrinus is the perfect slice of Neapolitan posh and the ideal way to spend an afternoon in the city. Recommended by local insider Matt Barker

3. Caffè del Professore

Cafe, Italian

Another much-loved Neapolitan institution near the elegant Piazza del Plebiscito, but a little less of a tourist trap than nearby Gambrinus, the Caffè del Professore is best enjoyed outside, though, as with every bar in Italy, you’ll have to pay a little more for the privilege. This family-operated coffeehouse is the ideal spot for a caffè alla nocciola – hazelnut cream coffee served in a wafer cup. Recommended by local insider Matt Barker

4. Cisterna Bistrot

Cafe, Bistro, Italian

This charming modern eatery, with a co-working space above, is the perfect place to enjoy a coffee break, a coffee-centric lunch or even a coffee cocktail. Named after the cisterns that once stored olive oil underneath the city, Cisterna Bistrot offers a more casual environment than the city’s historic coffee houses. If you’re looking for a vibrant but relaxing cafe atmosphere with a big wine list and meals made from fresh local ingredients, it won’t disappoint. Bask in the air conditioning, free wifi and generous amount of USB and ethernet outlets. Recommended by local insider Debbie Oakes

5. Scaturchio

Cafe, Italian

Looking to satisfy your sweet tooth alongside your caffeine craving? If so, Scaturchio, a traditional family-run pasticceria in the middle of the city, is full of the dreamiest pastries imaginable – sfogliatella, babà (rum cake), pastiera (Neapolitan tart) and ministeriale, a liquor-filled chocolate medallion. Stand at the bar for an authentic Italian experience or sit in the piazza for al-fresco seating. All pastries are handmade by world-class pastry chefs every day.
