August is drawing to its close and pretty soon the early farewell greetings of Kalo Xeimona (Happy Winter, a greeting used at the end of the summer) will soon be the music of the day. With the first Athenians slowly returning home, it does feel like summer is ending. Don’t despair, however, as September has plenty to offer in the way of must-see exhibitions and live performances to attend. Read on to know what’s on in September in Athens.

02 September | Screening at 09:30 PM

The 6th Athens Open Air Film Festival is coming to an end, and this is one of the last chances to catch the screening of The Misfits, a 1960s classic starring icons Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe. The movie gained in significance as it was their last appearance on the silver screen for each respective star. Don’t skimp on popcorn; the film is over two hours long. Free admission.

01 September – 31 December

This exhibition is a tribute to The Departed, twenty-eight contemporary artists in the Frissiras’ collection who have long since deceased, in an attempt to introduce them to a younger audience. The exhibition will retrace their oeuvre and prove that art is immortal. Featured artists include Demosthenis Skoulakis, Henk Van Boekel, Susan Hay, Vasso Katraki, Philippe Perrot, Chryssa Romanou and Jean Rustin, among others.

Since its launch a couple years ago, Massroom Poolside Club has organized the best foam parties in town. This year again, the Foam party is back. Prepare for an epic line-up as well as a LOT of fun. Water guns, inflatable water mattress, foam cannons and anything you can think of will be waiting for you at the “sudsiest” party of the year.

The Budapest Gypsy Symphony Orchestra hardly needs an introduction. Performing for over 30 years, this band is coming once again to Athens to perform at the majestic Odeon of Herodes Atticus theater for an incredible night under the Acropolis.

The premiere of the latest Tom Hanks movie is set for Thursday at outdoor cinema Ciné Floisvos by the seaside. The movie, with its ideal location, is an excellent way to end a day at the beach.

Prolong the summer with Best Radio 92.6 at Bolivar Beach Bar. Dance along to some of the best Greek DJs including Maria Papidaki, Evi Sidiropoulou Fading Soul and Sotus Bo.
