During the summer months, there is no better way to take a break in Germany’s fascinating and effortlessly cool capital city than with a refreshing ice cream. Berlin, true to its fashionable and alternative style, has a range of ice cream parlours offering both timeless classics and novel innovations. The Culture Trip lists the 10 best locations that the city has to offer.

EisPiraten

If the name, aesthetic, or even just the idea of being an ‘ice pirate’ haven’t won you over, then the diverse array of delicious flavours offered by EisPiraten will be more than enough to leave you satisfied. With suitably nautical décor and merchandise, the look might tempt you inside, but the taste will keep you coming back for more. Situated in trendy Friedrichshain, in the east of the city, we firmly recommend saying a hearty ‘y’arr’ to Eispiraten during your stay. EisPiraten | © Conticium/Flickr

Der Eisbärliner

Priding itself on its selection of vegan ice creams and cones, Der Eisbärliner, in Friedrichshain, is a staple on any Berlin ice cream list. The soy milk chocolate flavour, supplied by ‘Tanne B’, is a delicious option for those who have cut milk from their diet. Der Eisbärliner’s simple aesthetic and friendly staff are a winner for those wanting to relax after a busy day shopping at the weekend markets in nearby Boghagener Platz.

Hokey Pokey

For a more sophisticated ice cream experience, Hokey Pokey offers an artisan approach. Situated a short distance from the heart of the city, in northern Berlin, this parlour is garnering a reputation for its classy packaging and presentation. Whilst this does mean it is less of a budget choice, the ice cream is of the highest quality. Something of a rarity, the rocky road flavour is a particular favourite and comes highly recommended. Eismanufaktur

With a growing number of shops in Kreuzberg, Friedrichshain and Neuköln, Eismanufaktur is deservedly renowned as one of the most popular artisanal ice cream parlours in Berlin. Marrying a suave feel and vibrant tasting product, Eismanufaktur have been serving up the cream of Berlin’s eis options since 2004. With an on-going commitment to keeping their products natural and reducing sugar levels whilst retaining their great flavor, Eismanufaktur is a great option for any traveler in the capital. Try out the organic Madagascan vanilla flavor, you won’t regret it.

Vanille & Marille

Vanille & Marille’s philosophy of all-natural ice cream, with zero colorants, flavorings and additives, is just one reason that it is famous in Berlin. More importantly, the ice cream is delicious. Combinations such as prosecco and mint, or coffee, chocolate and sherry, prove real winners. With fun marketing and a good attitude, Vanille & Marille has won over the Berlin public. It is worth the trip to one of their parlors, which can be found in Kreuzberg, Schoeneberg, Steglitz and Tempelhof. How many ice cream shops can boast their very own pop single?

Kleine Eiszeit

As its name (Little Ice Age) suggests, Kleine Eiszeit is proving that great cold things do indeed come in small packages. Located north of the Mitte area, this parlor has a cozy neighborhood feel and friendly staff. With the mouth-watering homemade choices of white chocolate and pistachio competing to accompany their waffles, more than one trip will likely be necessary. Lauter Eis

With an evolving selection of delectable flavors, all homemade, Lauter Eis prides itself on offering the freshest and purest ice cream available. Alongside classics such as Sicilian pistachio and sesame honey, the parlor is also unafraid to try out interesting combinations, for example spicy chocolate. With a range of coffees, teas and wines there is more than enough to accompany the great ice cream. The macaroons are also well worth a try.

Florida Eiscafé

With its roots in the Berlin of the late 1920s, Florida Eiscafé has established itself as fixture of the city. It survived the destruction of the original premises in 1944, and its growing success is down to its excellent product. Having expanded to a number of locations, including Klosterstrasse and Alt- Tegel, Florida Eis has recently made a commitment to carbon neutral production and providing a number of gluten and lactose free options. Eis-Box

A local legend in Moabit, Eis-Box treat their ice cream and the process of making it with an almost religious reverence. With organic sourcing, natural production and a commitment to the freshest produce, they offer a somewhat more expensive but superior quality of product. With seasonal flavors available, there will always be some variety to satisfy a craving. Only a short distance from the Spree, a picturesque walk along the river can compliment the sublime tastes.

Eiskimo

Eiskimooffers 18 daily ice cream flavors to appeal to the broadest range of tastes. With emphasis on the best-sourced ingredients, such as Belgian chocolate and fresh fruit, Eiskimo is becoming the go-to place in Kreuzberg for the ice cream connoisseur. Their Kinder Bueno ice cream alone should be enough to make the trip worthwhile, and with great variety and evolving choices staying away won’t be easy. You can also hire their ice cream cart for parties, to share with friends or not share at all.
