First, admire the pretty blue facade of this historic building, which dates back to the 1800s. Now enter and clock the smart interiors, lovingly restored and renovated over the years. The property has four one-bedroom apartments, each with soaring ceilings 17ft high, fully equipped kitchens and large dining rooms. Eat in by all means, but these apartments are handy springboards into the local scene, in a residential neighborhood very near the Castillo San Felipe (El Morro Fort).

This is a special place, owned by husband-and-wife team Eddie Ramier and Margarita Pastor. There are five apartments to choose between, all furnished with Spanish-informed dark wood furniture, high ceilings and exposed beams. Two of the accommodations have balconies overlooking the cobbled streets. Breakfasts – which are complimentary – include French-toast brioche and coconut pancakes, all home-made with local ingredients.

Great for families or larger groups, Antillas Loft is a modern three-bedroom apartment that can sleep up to eight. Details – such as exposed pipework and concrete ceilings – lend an industrial feel, softened by neutral-painted walls and comfortable furniture.
