Whether you’re looking for somewhere to go on a honeymoon, pop the question or simply spend quality time with your other half, the sultry islands, tropical coastlines and ancient cities in the Land of Smiles are home to some of the most romantic hotels in the world. Ready to walk off into the sunset? Here are our favourite romantic getaways in Thailand.

1. The Sarojin, Khao Lak

Resort, Luxury

Looking for a place to wine, dine and canoodle in a couples bath? Whisk your lover off to the Sarojin. Residences here come with huge open-air bathrooms and sun terraces – some have private pools. Don’t worry if you have a late night, as breakfast is served all day. Romantic meals at the beachfront restaurant are enhanced by the extensive wine list; choose from more than 200 bottles from around the world. Don’t miss a trip to Similan Islands National Park for top-notch diving.

2. Trisara, Phuket

Resort

There are 37 gigantic villas peppering the hillside at Trisara, overlooking the Andaman Sea beyond the private resort beach in northwest Phuket. Each residence includes a private pool, spa-like bathrooms and outdoor showers. Take your beau to sunrise yoga, work up a sweat in the muay Thai boxing ring or up the ante with a private helicopter flight to see James Bond Island, the gravity-defying limestone karst tower that featured in The Man With the Golden Gun (1974).

3. Soneva Kiri, Koh Kood

Resort

You’ll have to fly to a neighbouring island and take a speedboat to get to Soneva Kiri, on lesser-known Koh Kood. But once you’ve sacrificed your shoes (this is a barefoot resort) and settled into your rustic-luxe pool villa, you’ll see that the journey was worth it. Treat yourselves to dinner in a lofty treepod, where meals are served by ziplining waiters. Sweet tooth? Swing by the chocolate room and home-made ice-cream parlour to satisfy your every need.

5. Nakamanda Resort and Spa, Krabi

Spa Hotel

Nakamanda Resort and Spa in Krabi is a 15-minute tuk-tuk ride from the beach town of Ao Nang, where you can catch a longtail boat to explore Railay Bay. The hotel itself overlooks a rocky cove, but a sandier, more swimmable beach is just a short walk away. While away the days with your loved one in your semi-outdoor sala (pavilion) or deep soaking tub before indulging in herbal body scrubs and soothing after-sun treatments at the spa.

6. The Siam, Bangkok

Boutique Hotel

Hugging the banks of the Chao Phraya River, smack bang in the historic heart of Bangkok, the Siam is fit for a king; indeed, Thai royalty has been known to frequent the facilities here. The antique-studded property blends traditional Thai design with art deco allure, best experienced in the jazz bar and retro cinema room. Sights such as the Temple of the Emerald Buddha and the National Museum of Bangkok are a short drive away.

7. Avista Hideaway Phuket Patong – MGallery

Resort

Avista Hideaway has everything you need for the romantic Thailand getaway of a lifetime. Enjoy the company of your loved one at one of three glistening pools, or indulge in a traditional Thai massage under a beautiful pavilion. The resort has a number of restaurants and bars, so you never need to leave the property. But if you do, Patong is a five-minute drive away.

8. Paresa Resort, Phuket

Resort, Hotel

Each room at the Paresa Resort offers a view of the Andaman Sea, the water stretching as far as the eye can see. Enjoy more ocean views from the infinity pool, where you’ll also find half-sunken lounge seating perfect for two, with plush cushions and a table on which you can rest a glass of wine. There’s also a selection of sumptuous facilities for your stay, from a library with floor-to-ceiling glass walls overlooking the water to a heavenly spa.

9. Romantic Resort and Spa, Khao Yai

Resort

Khao Yai, the first national park in Thailand, is where you’ll find the Romantic Resort and Spa. A rather dreamy resort pool (flanked by six elephant statues) sits in a pristine courtyard, while a decadent spa offers bathing facilities in the style of Japanese onsen(hot springs), a salt room and aqua beds. There are a variety of rooms, many of which have a private balcony, a minibar and gripping views of the pool and mountains.

10. Rayavadee, Krabi

Resort, Hotel

On the Andaman coastline, just outside the National Marine Park, is Rayavadee, one of the most secluded and dreamy resorts in Krabi. The resort is styled on a local Thai village, with 94 pavilions and seven luxury villas sitting within coconut groves and tropical gardens. There’s also a focus here on protecting the natural surroundings, with staff regularly taking part in (and organising) beach cleans, mangrove planting and sea life repopulation projects.

11. Four Seasons Tented Camp Golden Triangle, Chiang Rai

Resort

Not all romantic getaways in Thailand are white-sand beaches. This Four Seasons is tucked away in the jungles of northern Thailand – and no less romantic for it. The teak-brown forest acts as the backdrop for a vacation of fun, from Thai cooking classes to an open-air spa. And if you’re looking to tie the knot, there are several open-air venues for a dreamy wedding ceremony.

12. Layana Resort and Spa, Koh Lanta

Resort

Koh Lanta is home to many romance-inducing luxury resorts, and one of the best is the Layana. Watch the ocean strum the shoreline from a beautiful infinity salt-water pool. Alternatively, head to the adjacent large jacuzzi for something a bit steamier. There’s also the Tides Restaurant and Sundowners Bar, both of which overlook the dreamy beaches. End the day with a romantic, candlelit dinner on the sands.

13. Pimalai Resort and Spa, Koh Lanta

Resort

Poking out of the jungle slopes, the Pimalai was built to complement nature. A plum spot on the Andaman coast helps, bringing ocean views that stretch over the forest canopy to the waters beyond. The best are found from the large pool (unless you can nab yourself a villa with a private, ocean-view pool). Spice things up with one of the complimentary spa classes, where you can learn the art of giving Thai massages or how to make a calming herbal pouch using Thai herbs.
