Although the rural areas of Austria still have some catching up to do, the capital has a flourishing LGBT community. The traffic lights in Vienna give hints to its openness – with designs altered to include same-sex pairings surrounded by love hearts, as well as heterosexual couples. The 5th and 6th districts are where you’ll find the highest concentration of gay, queer and lesbian bars, as well as various events and festivals that take place in the city throughout the year.

1. Felixx

Rainbow Ball

Taking Vienna‘s ball dance tradition into the 21st century, the Vienna Rainbow Ball (or the Wiener Regenbogen Ball) is one of the city’s most popular dances of the season and a highlight for the LGBTQ community. Taking place in January each year, the ball celebrates diversity and helps raise funds for Homosexual Initiative Vienna, the city’s largest gay and lesbian organization.
