Affordable, luxury and family-friendly hotels are in no short supply in Schladming, a former mining town in the Austrian state of Styria. Most have spa facilities including saunas – perfect for easing tired ski legs in winter or after a summer hike – and excellent eating options. From traditional lodges to contemporary choices, here’s our pick of the best.

1. Stadthotel Brunner

With an edgy design and central location, this hotel in Schladming puts wellness at its heart. There are yoga sessions – ideal after a day’s skiing or hiking – and a divine spa complete with Finnish sauna, hanging basket chairs and a sheltered terrace with panoramic views of the Dachstein Massif. Located right on the Planai slope, in the centre of Schladming, this hotel offers affordable accommodation, hearty breakfasts and a fun après-ski scene. Rooms range in size – from cosy singles to large, four-bed apartments with self-catering facilities. Breakfast options include pancakes, homemade jams, Bircher muesli and cooked-to-order eggs. The hotel is next door to a ski rental shop, plus great biking and hiking routes are right on the doorstep in summer.

Just a few minutes’ walk from the pistes of the Planai, with an à la carte restaurant, discounted ski rental and spa facilities, this hotel is just the ticket for a winter break in the Schladming-Dachstein region. Rooms and suites are modern and comfortable, and the largest can sleep up to six, ideal for families. As well as fine dining, the restaurant runs themed evenings, including steak night with everything from surf ’n’turf to New York fillet.

Run by a pro snowboarder and Olympic champion skier, this boutique hotel is refreshingly different, with contemporary flair, great eating options and superb winter and summer facilities. Rooms are modern and pared-back, with floor-to-ceiling windows to make the most of the mountain views. There’s a Scandi chic vibe to this hotel with its natural wood interiors, minimalist decor and contemporary fittings. Stretch aching muscles in the yoga studio or relax in the sauna or infrared room. Sip mulled wine by the fire in the lounge and tuck into traditional apple strudel. There’s no need to queue for a lift ticket either – the hotel sells them direct and also has storage for your kit.

Rooms blend traditional touches with modern comforts, and suites have a separate living area and panoramic balcony.
