The Best Hotels in Obertauern, Austria for Every Traveller
Obertauern, in Austria’s Salzburgerland, is a quieter ski resort than most. The village is a small, colourful little hub, purpose-built in the early 1900s, that shot to fame in the 1960s after the Beatles spent two weeks here in 1965 filming Help! Topping out at 2,313m (7,589ft) and with plenty of snow, it’s the perfect ski holiday spot for both families and intermediate skiers. Here’s our pick of the best hotels in the area.
Das Kohlmayr Superior
Hotel
With an emphasis on comfort and elegance, Das Kohlmayr Superior has 61 rooms and a multipurpose space for climbing and yoga. However, the main attraction is the 1,300sqm (13,993sqft) spa spread over three levels, with panoramic views of the mountains. It includes an infinity pool (for those Instagram points), a relaxation room and a sauna, helping to restore your body while pointing out the slopes you tackled.
Hotel Steiner
Hotel
Run by the Steiner family and their 35 employees, Hotel Steiner guarantees a warm, welcoming stay. There’s a Scandinavian feel to the rooms, full of greys, wood and warm lights. Breakfast and lunch buffets are included, and the hotel offers free rental of hiking poles, rucksacks and water bottles. Kids will love the playroom and separate teen lounge, complete with Nintendo Wii, a table football and air hockey.
Hotel Manggei
Hotel
Hotel Manggei is Obertauern’s design hotel, with style for miles. The architecture is smart and practical, built and focused around natural materials, primarily wood and stone, and modern art is placed sparingly around the interior. Here, comfort is a priority – the name manggei is taken from the local name for a groundhog because that’s how the hotel hopes you sleep. The first ski lift, meanwhile, is just outside the door.
Hotel Garni das Barbara
Hotel
In the middle of Obertauern, you’ll find the Hotel Garni das Barbara. The rooms are simple but tasteful, and the on-site Restaurant Pasteria M3 is a winner, with a bubbly atmosphere and traditional fondue served in steaming bowls. It’s the perfect place to catch up after a big day on the slopes. Just 20m (66ft) from the door is the beginner’s hill and the Sonnenlift, Zehnerkarbahn and Grünwaldkopf to whisk you up the mountain.
Hotel das Seerkarhaus
Hotel
Right by the ski slopes of Obertauern, Hotel das Seekarhaus is a family-focussed five-star luxury spa hotel. In the 1,300sqm (13,993sqft) pool area, there’s a family sauna and steam room, along with a children’s swimming pool and an adults-only sauna for when you want to escape. Bedrooms are cosy with faux-fur blankets and chalet-style windows, and there’s free underground parking available on-site.
Foxy Obertauern
Hotel
For those on a budget who want to maximise their ski time, Foxy Obertauern is a modern aparthotel with a tech edge. Check in using a keypad, and settle into your snug room, complete with a kitchenette. Don’t fancy cooking? Just contact Foxy’s digital concierge via its WhatsApp. Downstairs, there’s a sauna, ski lockers, free underground parking and a special vending machine in case you forget your toothbrush.
Austria Alpinhotel
Hotel
Near the bottom of the Edelweißbahn chairlift, Austria Alpinhotel is as close to a ski-in, ski-out hotel as it gets, allowing you to get on the slopes first thing in the morning. Choose from either a large family-friendly apartment or wood-clad suite, complete with an espresso machine and a rain shower. Head chef Christian Altersberger puts on a fine menu, serving up locally caught game from the forests of Lungau. If you like après-ski in the sunshine, then you can head up to the hotel bar at Plattenkar for pumping tunes and ice-cold beers.
Hotel Kesselspitze
Hotel
If it’s the full five-star, celebrity experience you’re looking for, head to Hotel Kesselspitze. On entering, you’ll be greeted by one of the most dramatic open fires you’ll see in a hotel lounge, beneath a huge dome skylight. Rooms are decked out with velvet furnishings, faux-fur blankets and cosy window seats to curl up with a book. Downstairs, the spa has an open-air whirlpool, an opulent indoor pool, a sauna and a large gym in case you didn’t get in enough exercise on the mountain.
Hotel das Tauernherz
Hotel
Hotel das Tauernherz is a relatively new addition to Obertauern. It opened in November 2017, under the ownership of the Franz family, with a firm commitment to sustainability. Not only was it built using climate-neutral wood from the region, it also has a private biomass heating plant to warm your room. Design-wise, it’s a super-modern take on the traditional chalet style. Families will love the swimming pool, bowling alley and dedicated playroom.
