The coffee scene in Perth has grown rapidly in recent years. Whether you’re in the mood for a flat white, long brunch or some avocado toast, you’ll never be short of café options in Western Australia’s buzzing capital.

Little Bird Cafe

Located on popular Lake Street, Little Bird Cafe is famous for its homemade cakes, hollandaise sauce and fresh juices. But it’s not the menu or ambience that makes this venue heartwarming. Besides serving tasty dishes, manager and head chef Brittany Kemp also teaches long-term unemployed people basic barista and baking skills via the Esther Foundation.

Sayers Sister

A family-run hotspot, Sayers Sister is the little sister of Sayers in Leederville and Sayers Little Brother. There’s a reason this place is always busy; it serves up perfectly poached eggs on local organic bread and a list of breakfast cocktail specials, including mimosas and bloody marys. On weekends, swap your morning coffee for an espresso martini and enjoy the upbeat vibes.

Re Store Cafe Northbridge

While popular hipster venues dominate the area, The Re Store is the original Perth coffeehouse. Established in 1936 by an Italian immigrant called John Re, this bright grocery, deli and café sells imported Italian goods and locally roasted Italian coffee. The lunchtime favourite and store speciality, the Continental Roll (conti roll), has people lining up for hours at a time. Opt for a Roman-style espresso at the communal counter, one of the favourites at Re Store.

Lil’ Toastface

A widely popular hip-hop-inspired café, Toastface Grillah has expanded to open a hole-in-the-wall café, Lil’ Toastface, on bustling William Street. Like the space itself, the menu is a reduced version of Toastface Grillah and features classic toasted sandwiches like the Notorious B.A.G (bacon, apple, gouda) and Shroomy Shroomy Ya (mushroom, spinach, double cheese and dijon). With al fresco seating only, the beats and coffee will have you coming back again, and again.

Braddocks Dispensary

Heritage-listed Braddocks Dispensary dates back to 1899, when it was used as a combined residence and medicine shop. Located on Aberdeen Street among the nightclubs, you can spot the venue from afar thanks to its blue hue with white trim edges and charming window. Serving up cold drip coffee, artisanal teas and a range of sweet and savoury pies, you’ll find a tonic for any ailments here.

Flora and Fauna

Vegans rejoice! This vegetarian/vegan café is as delightful as the edible flowers that are served on almost every meal. The spacious venue offers both indoor and al fresco dining and is hugely popular with a younger crowd. Try the colourful vegan pancakes for something sweet, or the Baja breakfast burrito if you’re in the mood for something savoury. Head here for a tasty breakfast with a pretty presentation.

Tarts Cafe

Serving modern Australian cuisine, Tarts Cafe is a favourite for casual café-style dining. This family-owned business is located in the heart of Northbridge, near the beautiful city park, Hyde Park. The café regularly holds special events such as high teas and degustation menus and even boasts a gift shop. Grab a takeaway flat white and walk up to Hyde Park for some time in the sun once you’re done eating.

The Moon Cafe

It’s hard to miss the Moon Cafe. This quirky venue is a 1950s themed diner and a late-night café serving up burgers, brunch and milkshakes. Established in 1990, this café has been a unique hotspot for over twenty years. Feel like sprouting some poetry? Head to the back room where weekly poetry slams are held every Saturday. Licensed with a full bar, you’ll need to order food with booze after midnight.

BOO Espresso

A popular hole-in-the-wall café, BOO Espresso is known for its welcoming neighbourhood vibe. Attached to a warehouse, this affable nook serves some of the best coffee in Perth. Operating from a window across from Robertson Park, light meals such as the savoury danish or hot cross bun accompanied by your choice of takeaway coffee are best enjoyed outside.

Little Willys

In the heart of Northbridge on William Street, Little Willys is the perfect spot to visit if you need a break from shopping. Take a seat on the wooden benches and refuel with one of the large breakfast burritos. Enjoy your coffee in their secret courtyard out back, before heading upstairs to the Paper Mountain Gallery for a look at the art.
