It might be just a few miles to the south of bustling Washington, DC, but Alexandria, Virginia, has a genteel air. Le Refuge

Le Refuge is the oldest French restaurant in the Old Town of Alexandria. The menu is traditional French bistro style and has a superb reputation among local Alexandrians. You will find classic dishes such as French onion soup, Avocado stuffed with crabmeat, escargots, frogs legs, and filet mignon served with a Roquefort sauce.

Cosmopolitan is a family-run restaurant and grill that offers German and Balkan cuisine made using the finest ingredients. On the menu are starters including traditional goulash and cevapcici – or grilled minced meat favored in Serbia and Croatia. You can also get a Greek or Tilapia salad to start, though the main courses available at Cosmopolitan are especially appealing for carnivores: try the stuffed veal schnitzel, wiener and jaeger schnitzel, pikata chicken schnitzel, lamb chops, steaks, or chicken skewers.

House of Dynasty

House of Dynasty is one of the oldest and most highly regarded Chinese restaurants in the north Virginia region. The cuisine is, of course, Chinese, though with an emphasis on Taiwanese dishes such as prawns served with walnuts and orange beef that are rarely seen on traditional Chinese menus. There is also a range of classic dishes made with beef, pork, duck and chicken, scallops, shrimp, and vegetarian options. Chef’s specialties include crystal chicken in garlic sauce, two-flavored fish, and fish fillet served Szechuan style.

Rustico prides itself on offering good quality, honest cooking with big hearty flavors, served up with excellent beers, of which there are over 400 in the Rustico cache. Among the entree courses on offer are classics such as grilled rainbow trout, burgers, pastrami pork ribs, roasted half chicken, and a sirloin of beef served with a blue cheese reduction.


Vermilion in the Old Town of Alexandria has been richly praised for the simple, modern American cuisine on offer. The menu provides regional cuisine using locally sourced ingredients that isn’t over-complicated or over-refined. On the menu are entrees such as pan seared salmon, house cut tagliatelle, locally sourced beef sirloin, and ‘Fields of Athenry’ lamb. Amongst the desserts to be found at Vermilion are familiar and heartening classics including lemon meringue pie, poppy-seed ricotta fritters, and mixed berry crumb cake.

Society Fair combines a butcher’s, bakery, restaurant, wine bar, and market under one roof. There are wine tastings and recipe demonstrations with the option of a three course dinner in the company of the chef and sommelier providing advice and tasting notes. The set menu currently features solmorgio, adobo-rubbed pork loin, and churros with blackberry caramel. The butcher’s offers rare meats including antelope and wild boar, as well as offal cuts such as tripe, brains, livers and kidneys that are rarely eaten today. The restaurant offers themed nights across the week.

Restaurant Eve provides a sophisticated dining experience in the Old Town of Alexandria. Having developed strong links with local suppliers, the restaurant aims to serve up the finest in organic Virginian produce, with herbs and fruits coming from the restaurant garden. The restaurant is based in an old warehouse that dates back to the 1800s and offers a tasting menu as well as an a la carte option for dinner service. Among the starters on offer is Virginia asparagus salad and foie gras terrine with local rhubarb, with ribeye of beef and crispy veal sweetbreads for mains.

Brabo is a collaborative project between Belgian head chef Robert Wiedmaier and chef de cuisine Harper McClure. The cuisine reflects the backgrounds of the two chefs and merges Belgian and Continental classics with a contemporary edginess using the finest seasonal produce. Originally hailing from Antwerp, Wiedmaier named the restaurant after the Brabo statue in his home city. There is a chef’s table at which diners can sample a tasting menu provided by the head chef and sommelier, and an outdoor terrace for al fresco dining. Brabo has built strong links with local farms and artisanal food producers with a menu that includes foie gras, bison carpaccio, Mediterranean sardines, honey roast duck breast, lamb loin, and swordfish, all served with the option of frites with mayonnaise in the traditional Belgian manner.

The Majestic

The Majestic serves classic American food using the finest quality seasonal produce. Starters on the menu include chicken liver mousse and local clams, whilst the main courses on offer at The Majestic include grilled pork chops, stuffed crab shells, Chesapeake Bay seafood stew, and jerk chicken.
