Want the 24-hour bustle of a city break but with some well-earned R&R? The Mirage is the solution, with its tropical-themed complex offering a retreat from the Strip’s non-stop stimulation. Head to the pool, and you’ll feel as if you’re on an exotic island, with its own waterfall, tranquil gardens and private cabanas, where cold drinks are delivered while you snooze. Elsewhere, the hotel has a range of top restaurants, big-name live shows, a secret garden with leopards and white tigers and, of course, its very own volcano that explodes every night.

Arguably the best-known hotel in Las Vegas, this 1960s property is renowned for its star-studded history, with the likes of Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr and Dean Martin being regulars back in the day. It is just as extravagant now, with a shopping mall, cocktail garden, nightclub, cigar bar and a vast array of dining options, including the first Gordon Ramsay Hell’s Kitchen restaurant in the world. The casino is one of the best in the city, too, and even the giant pool complex has four swim-up blackjack tables.

You can’t miss the Luxor at the south end of the Strip. Easily identifiable thanks to its soaring black pyramid, the hotel is a flamboyant tribute to ancient Egypt, with themed murals, artwork and statues at every turn. There’s nothing outdated about the amenities though, which include the lavish Nurture Spa, a gigantic 19,000sqft (1765sqm) pool complex, several restaurants and some of the longest-running shows on the Strip, including one by the Blue Man Group.

The bright lights of the big city meet the even brighter lights of Sin City at this Big Apple-themed hotel, where you will never be bored. Take in the replica sights including the Statue of Liberty and the Brooklyn Bridge, head to the video games arcade, or down a pint in the huge pub, which was built in Ireland and then shipped in its entirety to Vegas. Prefer something a little more high-octane? You can always ride the hotel’s very own rollercoaster.

If gimmicks and themes aren’t your thing, this recently refurbished resort will offer you a more refined Vegas experience. Unwind by one of three pools, book in for a massage at the spa, or check out the specially curated art, including works by David Hockney and Henrique Oliveira. When hunger hits, head to the Italian marketplace with more than a dozen Italian cafes, gelaterias and pizzerias.

This glitzy big-name spot was a Vegas icon long before most other hotels had even welcomed their first guest. First opened in 1941, the property has been recently refurbished but is still deliciously retro, with flamingos and bright pops of neon pink everywhere you look. There are real-life flamingoes in the gardens outside, too, plus a family-friendly food court and Beach Club Pool, as well as the adults-only Go Pool with top-name DJs and raucous parties.

Try something a little different, and swap the big-name Vegas hotels for the first standalone boutique hotel on the Strip for adults only. Even the rooms have a plush, grown-up feel, with dark leather, hardwood floors, antique furnishings and deep berry accents inspired by Parisian apartments. Elsewhere, there’s a rooftop pool club, a swish Italian restaurant from TV chef Giada De Laurentiis, an intimate basement lounge and a digital concierge service for anything else you need.

A must-visit for every Vegas tourist, thanks to its famous dancing fountains, the Bellagio is a treat to stay in, too. Check-in, and there’s barely any need to leave the hotel again, thanks to a mammoth casino, spectacular botanic gardens, an art gallery, lakefront views and excellent theatre shows. When it’s time to eat, choose from nearly 20 impressive restaurants, including fine-dining Picasso, where you will be served dinner in front of bonafide masterpieces from the celebrated artist himself.

Easily bored? This fun-packed hotel and casino on the Strip is rammed with activities and entertainment. Think a shark reef aquarium home to over 2,000 animals, a 12,000-seat sports and concert arena, shows from the likes of Cirque du Soleil, a music hall, a beach club, an Irish pub, a nightclub and even an ice bar. Phew. If you need a lie down to recover, hotfoot it to the hotel’s own sandy beach with a wave pool, lazy river and lagoon.

No expense has been spared recreating the Italian city of love in this gloriously decadent hotel. All rooms are suites, and there’s marble as far as the eye can see. Here, you’ll find vaulted ceilings, a replica of the Sistine Chapel, Doge’s Palace and even the Grand Canal, where guests are serenaded by opera-singing gondoliers. Even the 2-acre pool (0.8ha) deck has Italianate sculptures, elegant columns and four year-round heated pools for an idyllic taste of la dolce vita.

Quiet nights are guaranteed at this sophisticated all-suite hotel next to the colossal MGM Grand. It’s a great choice for anyone wanting to spread out and escape the parties and casinos of other hotels on the Strip. Soundproofed suites still have ample Vegas luxe, though, with whirlpool spa baths, full kitchenettes and plush king-size beds.
