Travellers, There's a Rainbow Village in Indonesia and It's Kinda Magical

Forget rainbow bagels and rainbow croissants – rainbow villages are now the new ultimate Instagram trend.

With the world looking a little bleak (thanks to those pesky politicians) it’s time to book a plane ticket and inject some much needed and fabulous colour into your life. How so? Follow everyone else and jet off to Kampung Pelangi in Randusari found in south Semarang, Indonesia. The reason is simple. The village has had an absolutely extraordinary colourful makeover – and yes, your Instagram is about to explode, as we like to say.

According to Lonely Planet, the pretty little village was once named Kampung Wonosari. Today, it has been transformed into a fashion runway of 223 rainbow houses – perfect time for all those upcoming Pride festivals, eh? Separated into two distinct communities, each colour-crazy house is painted in a minimum of three blinding shades, overlaid 3D drawings included. Oh, and the bridge and village benches have also had the Pantone treatment too.

Why the sudden change? Tourism. The local government wants you to visit and Instagram the bejesus out of the place. With paint supplied by those at The Indonesian Builders Association, locals throughout the town are said to be thrilled with the fantastical makeover.

Pioneered as an important social project, the former slum-turned-celebrity neighbourhood has already experienced a surge in domestic and international travellers, who are now helping to support the local economy.

Looks like social media is saving the world again. #forthegram.
