Tabby is a building material made of lime, seashells, and sand used from the 1500s to the 1800s in the Southeast. Salt Marsh by Pin Point

Pin Point Heritage Museum

Pin Point celebrates the culture and history of the maritime Gullah and Geechee communities. The Gullah and Geechee ethnicity is the only African-American Creole identity in North America. For nearly 100 years this Gullah/Geechee community of Pin Point was isolated from the rest of the world and lived a sustainable lifestyle. In the 20th century, A.S. Varn & Son opened up a oyster and crab factory in the Pin Point community. The factory closed in 1985 and is now the site of the Pin Point Heritage Museum. Visitors can come learn about the fascinating Gullah and Geechee cultures in this historical site and museum.

Live Oaks and the Greenway

Bacon Park Golf Course

Enjoy prime year round golfing among Savannah’s iconic live oak trees. Bacon Park is a public course that offers all 18 holes of golfing for only $20. Or practice your swing at the putting and driving range for $5. The course was designed by Donald Ross in 1926 and remains a popular attraction for locals and visitors. They also have a PGA Pro on staff to teach lessons and a club house for relaxing after a game.

Fish Aquarium

University of Georgia Aquarium

Even though the University of Georgia campus is in Athens, Georgia, the aquarium and oceanography institute are only 20 minutes from the Southside. Nestled next to the river on Skidaway Island, the UGA aquarium has 16 exhibit tanks that show off Georgia’s marine life. For only $6, visitors can enjoy the facility, outdoor area, and boardwalks. The aquarium also offers public programs at the facility or on the water.

Isle of Hope Marina

Across the river from Skidaway Island, the Isle of Hope area takes visitors back in time to quiet, Southern life along the marshlands. The district was originally used in the 1800s by the Savannah elite as a summer sanctuary away from the city heat and malaria outbreaks. The marina is a must-visit in the area, and has been listed as a Historic Place on the National Register. After exploring the marina, check out the beautiful 19th-century mansions within this charming community.

Take a walk inside Armstrong’s 268-acre campus and scope out labeled native and introduced plant species of all types. Common plants to the Georgia coastal region include live oak, southern magnolia, red bay, horse sugar, and sparkleberry. There are also numerous gardens within the Arboretum such as the camellia, conifer, fern, ginger, international, and primitive gardens. The Arboretum is a great place to enjoy a diverse range of flora and learn the importance of conservation and awareness to horticulture. Maps and plant guides are also available to the public for these scenic walking visits.

There’s fun awaiting the whole family at Norwood Stables. The stables offer Equestrian and Western riding lessons, summer camp programs, a petting zoo, and carriage rides. Norwood is happy to cater to both locals and visitors. They also provide birthday party events with full access to the petting zoo. Children will love the friendly riding lessons, or the chance to pet miniature ponies, llamas, bunnies, and donkeys at the petting zoo.
