One of the best-known items produced in Puerto Rico, in addition to rum, is coffee. Coffee production on the island goes back centuries, and at one point, Puerto Rico was among the top 10 coffee producers worldwide, according to Sandra Farms Coffee. Currently, there is a shortage of labor in the coffee industry, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t plantations, or haciendas, for visitors to experience. Learn about the following haciendas, their delightful products, and a bit about Puerto Rico’s famous coffee. Did you know – Culture Trip now does bookable, small-group trips? Hacienda Buena Vista

Made up of 87 acres, Hacienda Buena Vista in Ponce is probably Puerto Rico’s most famous coffee plantation and now functions as a museum; however, at one point, it used to ship approximately 10,000 pounds of coffee to Europe each year. The 19th-century hacienda’s notable features include stables, former slave quarters, the manor house, and a corn mill, which receives water from a canal. Group tours are available on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Sandra Farms Coffee

Dating back to 2001, Sandra Farms Coffee is named after one of the owners of the business, Sandra Gonzalez—the other owner being Israel Gonzalez. To process the coffee, they utilize environmentally friendly techniques that result in less water and energy use. This mountain-grown Arabica coffee brand operates using Fair Trade standards, and the coffee is made to order. Make sure to check out some of their products online.

Hacienda Gran Batey

Founded in 2003 and located in Utuado, the Hacienda Gran Batey is a family-run business that produces made-to-order Arabica coffee, made entirely in Puerto Rico. According to their website, they focus on quality and freshness and utilize a couple of different ways for processing the coffee beans. José B. Morales, who runs the business with his wife and kids, is a retired agronomist. Anyone interested in seeing photos of their products?

Hacienda Tres Angeles

Another coffee producing location near the center of Puerto Rico, but in the town of Adjuntas, is Hacienda Tres Angeles. At the hacienda, the coffee produced is single-origin Arabica/Caturra, and there is a café on-site where visitors can enjoy their brand of coffee. When it comes to awards, it’s worth mentioning that this business was “the first Agro-tourism Certified farm by the Puerto Rico Tourism Company” and was named Tourism World Champions by the United Nations World Tourism Organization in 2015. To catch a glimpse of the hacienda and its products, visit their official website.
In addition to the coffee made at the haciendas featured here, other popular Puerto Rican brands of coffee include Café Yaucono, Café Rico, and Café Lareño. Coffee lovers and casual drinkers really can’t lose by taking a trip to Puerto Rico.
