History of the area

The location of the hotel and reserve is an area full of history, with construction dating back to the early 1900s. At the time, Dr. Alfred T. Livingston bought 1,700 acres and upon his passing, his daughter Clara Livingston ran the property. One of the structures that Clara built is now used as a hacienda for guests called Su Casa. Then in the mid-1950s, Laurence Rockefeller converted the property to a natural sanctuary and resort that many millionaires visited. Over the next couple of years more of the surrounding area was acquired and Clara Livingston’s airstrip for planes was bought in the 1960s. The airstrip was closed in 1996.
