The Caribbean island of Puerto Rico is famous for its rum, and one of the biggest names is Bacardí. Travelers will be pleased to hear that sections in and around their largest distillery are open for viewing. This is a don’t-miss experience for any rum or history enthusiast, or tourists simply looking for an interesting activity to enjoy.

Casa Bacardí

Bacardí is an internationally renowned brand dating back to 1830 in Santiago de Cuba, founded by Don Facundo Bacardí Massó. For decades the company has had a significant distillery in Cataño, Puerto Rico, and it is here that you can find the impressive tourist center known as Casa Bacardí. Only about half an hour away by car from the San Juan International Airport, the attraction is also accessible via a Cataño ferry ride through the San Juan Bay, to a shuttle bus that takes visitors to the Casa. Good news for your wallet is that the ferry and shuttle bus option costs less than 5 U.S. dollars.

The Tours

The Bacardí bat logo is visible in different forms throughout the Casa Bacardí tour experience. Three tours are available, including the Rum Tasting Tour and the Historical Tour. Some of the highlights include viewing historic Bacardí bottles, witnessing part of the distillation process, and a stop at an outdoor bar. There’s also the opportunity to take part in some mixology, preparing delicious Bacardi cocktails and of course, there’s a gift shop where you can pick up a bottle or two, to take home.

Casa Bacardí’s restaurant is named after a black servant of the Bacardí family who helped save them from the Spanish authorities in 1896, when they were in possession of rebellious letters. Through quick thinking and bravery, Georgina saved the family from potential imprisonment and Don Emilio Bacardí from the possibility of the death penalty .

Some of the culinary dishes to savor at the restaurant are pork belly mofongo with caldo resaca, the G Bacardí wagyu burger and alcapurrias stuffed with shrimp.
