The Best Places for Live Jazz Music in Montreal
Montreal famously has a rich music scene, in particular a wide range of jazz venues. The annual Montreal International Jazz Fest draws 2m visitors to the city every year, closing the downtown core for 10 days. But you can catch live jazz all year round – here’s Culture Trip’s pick of the best.
1. Diese Onze
Bar, Bistro, Hole in the Wall, Contemporary
With an unassuming storefront on Rue Saint-Denis, a low cover cost and a murky basement setting, Diese Onze comes to life every night of the week, offering some of the best live jazz performances in Montreal. Monday Latin nights are particularly popular, and it’s well worth arriving early to get in ahead of the crowd. Choose from a variety of wines and a cosmopolitan menu.
2. Café Résonance
Bar, Restaurant, Vegan, Vegetarian, Coffee
Seamlessly blending the atmosphere of a café, vegan restaurant and live-music venue, Café Résonance is known for its creative and eclectic approach to local food and music, making it a popular gathering place at just about any time of day. Since its establishment in 2012, it has hosted jazz, classical and experimental music events, in addition to book launches and poetry readings, every night of the week.
3. House of Jazz
Nightclub, Steakhouse
Although the storied downtown venue has unfortunately shut down due to the pandemic, the nearby Laval location of House of Jazz remains open (with the added benefit of free parking). Since 1981, the House of Jazz has been a landmark of live entertainment in Montreal, bringing in big national and international names. Dig into its extensive wine list and steakhouse menu as you enjoy a lively night just off the island of Montreal.
5. Bistro à JoJo
Bar, Bistro, Pub Grub, Canadian
6. Upstairs Jazz Bar and Grill
Bistro, French
With its cave-like setting and casual fare, Upstairs features memorable live jazz and jam sessions in downtown Montreal. The intimate atmosphere makes it a great place to grab a bite to eat and a drink with friends just about any night of the week.
7. Jardin Nelson
Bistro, Restaurant, Canadian
Since you are here, we would like to share our vision for the future of travel - and the direction Culture Trip is moving in.
Culture Trip launched in 2011 with a simple yet passionate mission: to inspire people to go beyond their boundaries and experience what makes a place, its people and its culture special and meaningful — and this is still in our DNA today. We are proud that, for more than a decade, millions like you have trusted our award-winning recommendations by people who deeply understand what makes certain places and communities so special.
Increasingly we believe the world needs more meaningful, real-life connections between curious travellers keen to explore the world in a more responsible way. That is why we have intensively curated a collection of premium small-group trips as an invitation to meet and connect with new, like-minded people for once-in-a-lifetime experiences in three categories: Culture Trips, Rail Trips and Private Trips. Our Trips are suitable for both solo travelers, couples and friends who want to explore the world together.
Culture Trips are deeply immersive 5 to 16 days itineraries, that combine authentic local experiences, exciting activities and 4-5* accommodation to look forward to at the end of each day. Our Rail Trips are our most planet-friendly itineraries that invite you to take the scenic route, relax whilst getting under the skin of a destination. Our Private Trips are fully tailored itineraries, curated by our Travel Experts specifically for you, your friends or your family.
We know that many of you worry about the environmental impact of travel and are looking for ways of expanding horizons in ways that do minimal harm - and may even bring benefits. We are committed to go as far as possible in curating our trips with care for the planet. That is why all of our trips are flightless in destination, fully carbon offset - and we have ambitious plans to be net zero in the very near future.
