The alpine town Zermatt is situated at a lofty 1,520m (4,985ft) above sea level. But that’s nothing compared to the sky-scraping Matterhorn that looms over this German-speaking town. You’ll notice the complete absence of petrol-guzzling vehicles, the enormous surrounding ski and hiking region and the romantic 16th-century wooden houses. It’s the perfect base for a ski holiday and exploring Switzerland’s highest peaks, with plenty of incredible hotels to choose from.

This guiding philosophy is evident throughout, from the expansive Mountain Ashram spa, yoga and sound meditation classes to the thoughtfully designed rooms, arranged into lodges, and the five restaurants and bars. This friendly five-star hotel is also well-known for its buzzy apres-ski atmosphere – you’ll love being able to ski straight to the terraces after a day on the slopes.
