Like the Himalayan city of Rishikesh, often called the ‘Yoga capital of the world’, Zürich is at the foothills of high mountains and flanked by river water. Whether these attributes play a role in the Swiss capital’s shared passion for Yoga is not for us to answer. The good news is that Zürich is full of experienced teachers keen to spread the benefits of the mindful discipline. Here’s our guide to Zürich’s best studios.

Airyoga

At Airyoga, plenty of attention is devoted to achieving just the right atmosphere. Quiet spaces, warm lighting, and premises decorated to awaken mind and body make their venues in the heart of Zürich standout. Offering sessions for more than 10 different yoga traditions, including Ashtanga, Vinyasa, and Anusara, you’ll be hard pressed to find more options anywhere in the city. Expats should count themselves very welcome, as the majority of classes are given in English.

YogaCorner

Shop

YogaCorner is fuelled by over 30 years of shared experience between the two owners and instructors, Evrim Helva and Eveline Wild. Working with a much bigger multilingual team, this studio offers classes in Vinyasa, Aerial Yoga, Hot Yoga, and Pilates, as well as treatments in traditional Chinese medicine and relaxing massages. The venue is equipped with modern amenities, dressing rooms with showers, and a small shop selling anything from yoga mats to clothes and books.

Sanapurna

Welcoming people from all walks of life and all levels, from complete beginners to experienced practitioners, Sanapurna promises a comprehensive learning experience in all aspects of Yoga, with particular reference to Patanjali’s 8-fold path. Drawing on ancient traditions and open to new interpretations, this yoga and naturopathy center provides a wide range of classes and designs individual treatments and courses for those after something a little different. Testimony to Sanapurna’s commitment, they offer a variety of specialized classes on all kinds of topics, regularly inviting scholars to give lectures and share their research.

Planet Yoga

Brewery

Open since 2004 and situated in the beautiful 19th century former brewery of Hürlimann-Areal, Planet Yoga requires no prerequisites other than a willingness to indulge in the practice and relatively good physical condition. They provide a variety of Yoga classes together with Pilates and run at least 20 classes over the course of a 7 day week. Flooded with natural light and boasting spacious rooms with high ceilings, the historic surroundings do their part in setting a truly soothing atmosphere. The studio is also recognised and certified by the international ‘Yoga Alliance’.

Ataïa Yoga

Shop

Spread across 215 square meters of brand new studio space, Ataïa Yoga offers classes in Anusara, Ashtanga and Hatha Yoga, as well as courses dedicated to expectant mothers and postnatal Yoga. Conveniently located just a couple blocks outside of the Schanzengraben, the luminous interiors are equipped with gender separate changing rooms and showers, a lounge area and a small shop. Beginners need not be wary; Discovery classes have been designed to take one through the basics of the practice in a relatively short amount of time.
