As one of Romania’s oldest cities, Iaşi (also known as Yahsh) has multiple personalities. The northeastern city is a college town, the site of the nation’s first university and now home to five of them, as well as nearly 100 Orthodox churches, mostly in the Platoul de Aur (Golden Plateau) area. But more than anything, Iaşi has unofficially served as the epicentre of Moldovian culture since 1408 – it’s an arm’s length from the border of Moldova. Here’s our guide to the best hotels in Iaşi.

Luxury living is only a seven-minute drive from the city centre at this secluded five-star hotel. Nature-inspired decor permeates through the rooms and apartments. Finish your day enjoying the live music at the Maia Fusion restaurant or exhaling in the spa, which has an aromatherapy Finnish sauna.

For remarkable good value, book the Unirea Hotel. Each of this property’s 186 rooms includes a breakfast buffet, soft drinks from the mini bar, and access to both the spa and business centre. Its central location is just across from the Unity Museum, but the best sight is from the top of the Panoramic Restaurant, soaring 55 meters above Iaşi.

Location doesn’t get any more prime than this. The Ramada by Wyndham Iaşi’s location is on the same corner as the Palace of Culture, housing four museums, plus the Palas Public Garden and Palas Mall. With a day’s worth of activities packed within a tight radius, it’s perfectly suited for everyone, whether your purpose is business or exploration, with family or on your own.

Hotel Arnia

The transportation options here are plentiful – the hotel sits on a leafy section of Șoseaua Arcu, near Str. Bacinschi tram stop, Iași Central Station, and just off of route E58. The three-star property boasts rooms in twin or double configurations. Breakfast is included, plus the front desk staff are welcoming and speak good English.

With 77 single rooms, 66 double rooms, and five apartment units, this Romanian alternative to the Ramada by Wyndham is just across from it on Str. Anastasie Panu, sharing its way-too-convenient location. It’s also just a five-minute walk to the Church of the Three Hierarchs and nine-minute stroll to Metropolitan Cathedral. For workout junkies, this facility is a dream with fitness and aerobic facilities, plus a sleek pool.

Iassium Residence Copou

Make yourself at home in one of these apartment hotel rooms. Choose from studios or one- and two-bedroom units, some with private outdoor terraces. The bright-white contemporary spaces all come with a kitchenette, making it convenient for long-term stays (or short-term ones for those with a knack for cooking). Located on the north side of town, bookworms will also love that it’s right by the Romanian Literature Museum.

Hotel Belleville

For a sweet and more personal stay, veer just a tad west of the action and settle in at this 20-room accommodation with modern furnishings and the added bonus of coffee, tea, and water throughout your stay. Choose from traditional singles and doubles or opt for the deluxe apartment with a full kitchen. It’s also just a five-minute walk to Iulius Mall, right by the Bahlui River.

Bellaria Hotel

Retreat to this secluded hotel south of town on Bulevardul Socola on the hills of Bucium. Though it feels like an entirely different world – especially in the Summer Garden – it’s only a seven-minute drive to the city centre. The 47 rooms feature solid-wood furniture and the Rustic Restaurant serves up old-school favourites, such as radauti (chicken) soup and Moldovan tochitura (pork sausage stew).

Hotel Eden

It’s easy to see why this hotel is called Eden—even though it’s practically smack dab in the middle of the old city, inside it’s a quiet oasis. Rooms include doubles or twins, plus there’s an onsite restaurant serving three meals per day – choose from Italian or traditional Romanian cuisine. Just a short walk away is City Hall, Parcul Teatrului Național, and a string of churches, including the Metropolitan Cathedral and Our Lady Queen of Iași Cathedral.
