Located in the heart of Umbria, Gubbio is a quaint Italian town known for its abundance of truffles. This fact alone makes it a place of culinary worship for many a foodie. Gubbio is situated at the base of Mount Ingino, lending the town a picturesque backdrop for enjoying a great meal al fresco. It can be difficult to choose between so many phenomenal dining venues, so we’ve done a bit of exploring on behalf of the hungry traveller. Here are the top restaurants in Gubbio, Italy.

1. La Cresceria

Cafe, Charcuterie, Restaurant, Vegetarian

La Cresceria offers casual Umbrian fare in a cosy café style environment complete with plenty of rustic finishes. The menu is mainly focused on flatbread sandwiches, which feature quality ingredients including Italian cheeses, sausage, porchetta, salami, roasted vegetables, mortadella, and fresh tomatoes. The sandwiches come in a great variety of combinations, so you’re sure to find something to satisfy every palette, including those of vegetarians. Other options include a charcuterie platter and various types of bruschetta. Pair your sandwich with one of the many regional Italian wines on offer.

2. Taverna del Lupo

Taverna del Lupo is a traditional restaurant known for its romantic ambience, popular with the locals. The walls feature beautifully painted plates and vases that could belong in a museum. Of course, the atmosphere alone isn’t what earns this place glowing reviews. It’s the phenomenal menu that gives Taverna del Lupo its substance. Popular items include succulent roast pork and lamb whilst truffles are another speciality here. Finish your meal with a Milanese brandy or one of Taverna del Lupo’s exceptional liqueurs. 3. Picchio Verde

Named after a woodpecker found in this part of Italy, Picchio Verde is a classic Italian restaurant with a homey interior that features stone walls and a large fireplace. Here you will find many different pasta and gnocchi dishes that feature shaved truffles, cheese, sausage, and vegetables as well as platters that come with delicately sliced meats that melt in your mouth, various types of bread, and for the sake of authenticity, a slice of melon. You can even watch the food being prepared the traditional way over the hearth at the centre of the restaurant.

4. Osteria dei Re

Osteria dei Re is an elegant, upscale establishment with a hospitable atmosphere, a typical family-run restaurant. This place offers a multi-course menu of antipasti, stews, homemade pasta, desserts and delicious wines. Osteria dei Re is located a short distance outside of the city in idyllic rural surroundings. The chef and sommelier will often be there to greet you upon arrival and are happy to recommend dishes for each course – think beetroot and cheese ravioli or gnocchi served with pork shoulder ragu.

5. Nicolao Ristorante

Located in the Park Hotel Capuccini, Nicolao Ristorante is an upscale establishment housed in a former monastery perched on a scenic hill-scape. The 17th-century interior is filled with modern art pieces which create a unique ambience. Nicolao is a short walk from many of Gubbio’s major attractions including the Palazzo dei Consoli and the Romano Theater. As for the food, there is an excellent array of risottos on offer as well as Umbrian sweets including poached pears. Each dish is prepared with high-quality, local ingredients.

6. Ristorante Di Porta Tessenaca

Bar, Restaurant, Wine Bar, Vegetarian

Ristorante Di Porta Tessenaca is a wine bar that also serves local dishes and snacks. Some common menu items include pureed vegetable soups, roasted boar, and of course, truffle pasta. As for the wines, you can find varieties here sourced from regions all across the country. While the stone interior is quite old, the dining hall is superbly maintained. The room has vaulted ceilings and is filled with tables dressed in white linens accompanied by fuchsia chairs.

7. Ristorante Da Baffone

Ristorante Da Baffone provides a rustic, authentic insight into Gubbio’s culinary scene. It is common to get lost on the way to this place, as it is a bit off the beaten track. There isn’t even a formal menu. This is an excellent spot for the more adventurous explorer and the effort to find Da Baffone is absolutely worth it. Each night the kitchen puts out a few different appetisers, handmade pasta and main courses to choose from. Most dishes include a generous portion of shaved truffles, whilst the interior is clad in old-school Italian décor.

8. Ristorante Bosone Garden

If you have a sweet tooth, paying a visit to Ristorante Bosone Garden is a must. This restaurant features a large terrace overlooking a picturesque landscape. In addition to the usual pasta and gnocchi covered in shaved truffles, the dessert selection stands as a central feature of the menu. From pastries covered in chocolate ganache to crème caramel and pastel-coloured tortes, to crisp and airy puff pastries, there is something to satisfy that wide-eyed, sugar-loving child in each of us. If you’re having a bit of trouble deciding what to order the jovial wait staff is happy to help, particularly with regards to the local wine selection.

9. Ristorante Fabiani

Situated on a peaceful side street, Ristorante Fabiani serves lots of different Italian staples with a penchant for pizza, grilled meats, hearty stews and indulgent desserts. Popular after-dinner favourites include cakes, crêpes and homemade ice cream served with warm berries all accompanied with an espresso, naturally. In addition to wine, Ristorante Fabiani serves regional craft beers which go perfectly with a pizza. The spacious interior consists of several rooms, and there is a canopied courtyard dining area to boot. Unlike at many restaurants in Italy, parking is straightforward as there is a designated parking lot directly outside the restaurant.
