Though Munich is generally considered Germany’s poshest and most expensive city, that doesn’t mean you can’t get a good deal for a place to stay. The city centre has a number of hotels, B&Bs and hostels, and some of them offer fantastic deals for budget-minded travellers. Here’s our pick of the best cheap hotels in Munich, bookable with Culture Trip.

Design lovers are sure to be in their element at the Cocoon Stachus hotel. As one of three Munich hotels of the brand, this particular hotel scores points with its vicinity to the old town and major museums, and its playful décor. The light-flooded rooms are designed with a ’70s woodland-theme including retro colours, rounded edges and forest décor. The cosy rooms are somewhat small but equipped with all standard amenities. Prices for a night’s stay start at €80 (USD$93), and breakfast can be booked at an additional charge of €9.90 (USD$11.50), though given that you’ll be surrounded by dozens of cafés and restaurants, you might find that eating out is a better choice.

If you’re really on a budget and first and foremost need a place to crash, check out the Euro Youth Hotel near Munich central station. Dorm room rates start as low as €30 (USD$35) in a 12-bed dorm, though ensuite private rooms are available (starting at €111 (USD$129) per double room and night) if you prefer to pay for a bit of extra for additional privacy. Unlike regular hostels, the Euro Youth Hotel doesn’t have a communal kitchen, but offers a daily all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet for €4.90 (USD$5.70), and given you’re at the heart of Munich’s buzzing centre, you won’t struggle to find affordable eateries for the remainder of the day. ACHAT Premium München-Süd

The ACHAT Premium hotel in Munich’s south has earned stellar reviews on all platforms and is a brilliant choice if you don’t mind relying on public transport around town – the city centre Marienplatz square is an easy 16-minute Ubahn ride away. The entire hotel is tastefully designed, and the rooms and suites feature top-notch facilities from underfloor heating, designer bathrooms, air-con and cable TV, plus all guests have free access to the on-site spa, wellness and gym area. Their N°30 restaurant serves food from breakfast through to dinner, and the lobby bar is good for late-night drinks once you’re back at the hotel – or you can retreat to the roof terrace. Prices start at €65 (USD$75), which is excellent value for money whichever way you look at it.

LGBT travellers and those in search of excellent customer service and a friendly vibe will enjoy their stay at Hotel Deutsche Eiche. Rainbow flags proudly decorate the facade of what’s one of the city’s most renowned LGBT venues. The hotel is only a short stroll away from the iconic city-centre spots Viktualienmarkt and Marienplatz, and gets bonus points for its roof terrace which grants panoramic views of the Altstadt and the on-site spa and sauna. The rooms are simple but clean and comfy, and all things considered, you really can’t go wrong here at a price around €79 (USD$91.70) per night.

If you’re on a budget but don’t want to comprise on a certain level of comfort and location, the Motel One chain hotels are a safe bet. The Munich Sendlinger Tor branch is no exception, and is situated at the western fringe of Munich Old Town, within walking distance of major attractions, such as the Museum of Urban and Contemporary Art, St. Peter’s Church and Marienplatz. Plus it’s only a stone’s throw from Theresienwiese which comes in handy should you be visiting for Oktoberfest. Both the rooms and common areas are decked out with stylish and modern furniture, comfy upholstery and beautiful lights, giving off a homely vibe.

You can walk to most of Munich’s sights and attraction from the Vi Vadi Hotel, as well as the central station which has direct links to Munich airport and more distant spots you might want to visit during your stay. All of the Vi Vadi hotels cater to both business and leisure travellers, and offer a sumptuous breakfast buffet, free WiFi, spacious and light-flooded rooms with all modern amenities, as well as an on-site restaurant which serves Italian food and wine. A night here costs upwards of €65 (USD$75), depending on the season, availability and room category.

Situated in a street close to Munich central station, the Creatif Hotel Elephant is an affordable city centre option. Most attractions – the Pinakothek, the NS-Dokumentationszentrum, the Stachus square and the Old Town – can be reached on foot within 15 minutes or a quick Ubahn ride. Room-per-night prices start at around €36.90 (USD$42.80) for a single and include a night’s stay in one of their basic ensuite rooms, but there’s an additional fee for WiFi. The hotel also runs the Deutsches Weingold restaurant which is 10 minutes away and serves a mix of Mediterranean cuisine and Bavarian specialities. As you’re right in the middle of the city centre, that’s only one of a multitude of dining options right at your doorstep.
