Leading German philosopher Oskar Negt said, “Hanover is one of the most enjoyable places to live in Germany: a leafy city with its own natural rhythm.” Indeed, one of its greatest attractions is the abundant greenery, most noteworthy at Eilenriede, the largest urban forest in Germany. Moreover, with a thriving cultural scene and the Deutsche Messe (Hanover Fairground), the largest exhibition centre in the world, the city is a convivial host for family trips or weekend getaways. Here we round up the best hotels in Hanover.

Whether staying in an Eco Single or New Style Double, all bedrooms are soundproof and “allergy-friendly”, ensuring an excellent night’s sleep. The Well & Fit gym is stocked with state-of-the-art equipment, including cardio machines, a cross trainer and a sauna with infrared cabin. Linden is a great place for shopping, with a lively pub, cafe and restaurant scene.

Over one hundred years ago, in 1914, Friedrich Kasten began building this hotel, which was to become one of the city’s favourites. Totally destroyed in WWII, it was rebuilt in time for the start of the Hannover Messe in 1947 – one of the world’s largest trade fairs. Its wealth of history can be explored on the picture-lined walls of the hotel. The location cannot be beaten for access to the museums, monuments, restaurants and shops, as well as Staatstheatre Hannover, the commanding Opera House.

3. Hotel Savoy, Mitte

Budget Hotel

Proud of its reputation as the city’s smallest four-star hotel, the Savoy’s size only adds to the allure of this cosy abode where cleanliness is paramount. Staff thrive on catering to the needs of their guests, offering a personal touch often absent from larger hotels in Hanover. A pleasant 10-minute stroll leads to the city centre and the Royal Gardens.

4. Old Printing House, Mitte

Doffing their cap to the building’s past use as an 18th-century printing house, the designers of this aparthotel have dotted the high-ceilinged spaces with retro touches. Tall school lockers, factory-style lighting and vintage cinema seats add character, while sections of brick wall and distressed concrete are left exposed, creating an inviting shabby-chic environment. The rooms are finished with contemporary touches such as heated floors, rain showers and fully equipped kitchens.

5. Boutique 030 Hannover, Goethestraße

Boutique Hotel, Apartment

With an enviable, lively city centre address along the Leine river, this 19-room hotel has been painstakingly converted from a Wilhelminian-era house. An ideal base for those who like to mini-break at the core of the action, it’s also a great choice for longer stays as all the apartments come with a kitchenette. The nice people at Boutique 030 don’t want you to toil too hard, though – they serve up a tasty breakfast every morning so you don’t have to.

6. Smartcity Designhotel, Mitte

Who better than esteemed architect of Hanover’s beloved rebuilt opera house, Dieter Osterlen, to create the city’s first design hotel? Completed in 1953, it was an instant success, and a film studio moved into the basement. Acclaimed Italian designer Matteo Thun was drafted in to oversee its refurbishment, resulting in a hip, respectful modernisation of Osterlen’s vision. Thun’s renovations were extended to the hotel’s popular Italian restaurant, L’Osteria, famed for its giant 45cm (18in) pizzas.

7. Aspria Hannover Maschsee

Spa Hotel

Hanover is known for its beautiful lakes, surrounded by acres of green forests. Lesser known, though, are its escapist sandy beaches. Award-winning Aspria Hannover is a slice of heaven, sitting by the cool waters of Lake Maschsee with access to a private beach. Renowned as the city’s leading wellness destination, with first-class accommodation, guests can take an exercise class, hit the gym, or give in to the tranquil ambience, indulging in a massage and pampering beauty treatment.
