Berlin’s Wedding borough is certainly catching our eye with its amazing developments, from bars and galleries to restaurants and clubs, and our latest crush is on the treehouse-inspired community and events space, Das Baumhaus (meaning treehouse).

The fairytale treehouse kitchen

Das Baumhaus has opened its wooden doors to a diverse range of events, including workshops, meet-ups and projects designed to enhance community values and inclusivity, all set within a magical, creative and nurturing atmosphere. The space was developed to serve groups and organisations who are interested in making Berlin a better place.

And what better image for growing ideas and supporting change than a great big tree? The idea to create a retreat for the neighbourhood as well as a creative events space was first planted by Karen Wohlert, a policy student, and her American roommate, Scott Bolden. After a successful online crowdfunding campaign, the treehouse is beginning to take roots.
The tree is the centrepiece of the space – a clever design solution that serves to repurpose a large support column, and turned out to become a metaphor for the work the space hopes to achieve. Transformed from repurposed materials, the space has been built by an army of volunteers, including artists, architects and designers offering a whole lot of time and love. “The aesthetics of nature are culturally neutral and certainly unique in the design scape of the city,” says Scott.

A cosy corner to work, network, imagine and inspire

Although fully functional and open for business, the space is still constantly transforming, just like Berlin itself. Das Baumhaus invites its community to be a part of the regular collaborative building sessions where people can contribute to the continuing aesthetic development of the space.

Besides creating artworks, illustrations, cosy nooks, brainstorming corners, and hammering the odd nail into a manmade tree, Das Baumhaus runs weekly events that range from personal sustainability workshops to refugee support initiatives to collaborative food saving and cooking projects. They welcome any project working towards a sustainable and democratic society.
