TINMAN

Cafe, German

Walking into laid-back TINMAN feels like setting foot in a beachfront café. Aside from the warm and genuine smiles from co-founders Justin, Harry, Miriam and their team, the homely and brightly lit pastel-coloured space is instantly relaxing. There’s a wide range of brunch options on offer, including smashed avocado and a roasted cauliflower bowl, but make sure to try their custardy sweet-yet-crispy coated french toast. In the words of the three co-founders: “Our main goal for your visit is for you to leave with a happy belly, a smile and a good memory.” If that won’t melt your tinman’s heart, we’re not sure what will.

What Do You Fancy Love?

Cafe, Coffee

Just a few steps away from TINMAN sits this cosy little café. Soak up the warming vibe as you step onto the café’s wooden floors and relax on one of its rustic wooden benches, which are arranged around long tables. Colourful bouquets of flowers adorn each table, blending their sweet aroma with the coffee-scented air. From indulgent brie and walnut bagels to healthy chia-covered muesli options, excellent food choices abound. But what you’ll really want to try here are their shakes and juices. The names alone are enticing: the Vampire shake (beetroot, carrot, orange and ginger) and the Sex Bomb juice (apple, raspberry and ginger) are well worth a try.

Café Fleury

Nestled between vibrant Rosenthaler Platz and Weinberg Park you’ll find the quintessentially French Café Fleury. Flakey croissants, mouth-watering pains au chocolat and sweet madeleines are all on the menu, with plenty more to satisfy sweet teeth. Cheese and meat plates accompanied by baguettes are also at the ready for those looking for a more savoury French dining experience. The highlight here is the outdoor seating: set up in a typically Parisian café layout, every blue-and-white chair faces outward, adorned with blankets in winter or basking under the warm sun in summer.

19 Grams

Cafe, German, Australian

Set across three floors, 19 Grams on Chausseestraße is a stone’s throw away from the Natural History Museum. Depending on whether you choose to prop yourself up at one of the high tables by the floor-to-ceiling front windows, melt into one of the plush vintage sofas on the upper mezzanine or sit at the long wooden table in the intimately lit back room, there’s a space for all moods. Never rushing guests to leave, the team allows customers to feel right at home, offering plenty of time to enjoy their incredible selection of artisanal coffees that are locally roasted, as well as their seasonal ‘Aussie-style’ brunch that’s available daily. If you prefer to opt for a lighter brekky option, the homemade granola on Greek yoghurt may sound simple, but it’s simply to die for.

Kopps

A list of breakfast spots in Berlin, one of Europe’s vegetarian capitals, would be incomplete without a healthy vegan breakfast option. Enter Kopps, where the team makes, as they say, “vegetables sexy for you”. And it’s true. Using only fresh and high-quality plant-based ingredients predominantly sourced from regional, seasonal and organic farming, this is a tick in the box for a healthy yet delicious brunch option. Served as a €20 (£17.75) buffet brunch over the weekends, there is a colourful assortment of hot and cold vegan creations and products to please almost every palate. Their famous vegan pancakes with berries and their soy yoghurt with fruits are both delectable. Located just off of bustling Torstraße, you certainly won’t leave this plant-friendly establishment hungry.

Hermann Eicke

Cafe, German, Coffee

For the ultimate caffeine fix, make your way to cool and modern Hermann Eicke, which also serves some flavourful bagels and cakes. Their bagel with goat’s cheese and pear is well worth trying, as are both the bircher muesli and the homemade banana bread that simply melts in your mouth. The name of the café refers to the German man who is believed to have invented the first tilting coffee maker – essentially the first coffee machine – back in 1880 in Berlin. No better name could have been used for this hip coffee-drinker’s haven, where they serve local coffee roaster Bonanza brews. Combine your visit to this café with a stop at the Berlin Wall, found just a few metres away on Bernauer Strasse.

Black Apron Café

Cafe, German, Coffee, Pastries

The new kid on the Mitte breakfast block, Black Apron Café is a must if you’re a fan of baked goods for breakfast. Its minimalist grey, black and white decor provides a chic environment in which to enjoy the café’s hearty American-style cakes, cookies and tarts. If none of the eight different cheesecakes take your fancy, there’s still an immense choice between pound cakes, loaves of banana bread or apple spelt cake and many other sweet goodies. To accompany all this delightful sweetness is specially sourced and roasted CODOS coffee. The house blend to try is their Bandit coffee, a beautiful balance of Indian and Brazilian coffee beans.

Father Carpenter

Located in a striking Hof, or inner courtyard, smack bang in the middle of historical Mitte, Father Carpenter should not be missed. The showstopper here is the seasonal menu. Expect incredible concoctions such as the FC Benedict, or “spicy goodness,” as Father Carpenter’s managing director, Kresten Thøgersen, calls it, which includes braised pulled pork, chipotle, poached eggs, hollandaise and apple on sourdough toast. The dish is so loved that it’s now a staple on the menu, which otherwise features seasonal dishes. Scandinavian in style, the interior space is simple yet stylish. Weather permitting, opt to sit outdoors where you can enjoy your breakfast in the typical Berlin courtyard, complete with trickling fountain. There’s also good wifi if you need a work-friendly brunch.

House of Small Wonder

Feel like you’ve stepped into a vintage greenhouse as you enter House of Small Wonder. First, twirl your way up the twisting white staircase adorned with hanging plants and old-school gardening tools before entering the bright, high-ceilinged space. Located just a short walk away from the famous Friedrichstrasse Station and Museum Island, it’s centrally located in an ideal spot for exploring the city. Drawing perfectly from the two owners’ Japanese and American heritage, this brunch spot blends Japanese influences with typical American brunch comfort foods, and you’re guaranteed not to leave hungry. The homemade biscuit benedict is a house favourite, which includes homemade yoghurt biscuits baked with ham, soft-cooked organic eggs and the pièce de résistance: a good dose of wasabi hollandaise. Enjoy with their speciality matcha latte and you’re all set for a day of sightseeing.
