Easter in Berlin has a characteristic mix of traditional German festivities and food, with a twist of Berlin parties, carnivals and bonfires. The holiday weekend brings a unique offering of family-friendly or adult-only fun for locals and visitors to enjoy. Here’s how to celebrate Easter in Berlin.
Easter in Berlin sees a range of events, carnivals and festivals coming to the city. Leading into and during Easter, Berlin hosts its annual Spring Festival. The carnival-like fun fair offers over 70 rides, plenty of traditional German food and a celebratory atmosphere. Citadel Spandau also invites guests to enjoy its annual Easter Ritterfest, a medieval Easter festival. Here, you can delight in knights’ tournaments, fire shows and an other-timely atmosphere. While history buffs can dive into the Germanic origins of the Easter bunny, and explore many other Easter-related questions, with a special guided tour on Good Friday at the German History Museum. By Easter Sunday, it’s time for Berliners to get glamorous, dressing up for the opening the city’s racing season at the Hoppegarten horse track.
The fun doesn’t stop there, as Berlin also hosts two large Easter markets. One in the city centre at Alexanderplatz brings a spring-like atmosphere with an array of wine stands and a welcoming beer garden. There are also numerous live performances and a petting zoo to provide entertainment for the little ones. Alternatively, for a more traditional ambience, head over to the Easter market on Kurfürstendamm, where giant Easter eggs decorate the square, charming carousel twirls and there is a full program of live entertainment fit for the whole family.
On Easter Eve, the highlight of Berlin’s festive program is a large bonfire in Spandau’s Gatow neighbourhood. Over in the Britz section of Neukölln, the lush green park, Britzer Garten, offers live music, rich hearty German food and a warming community vibe.
It wouldn’t be a holiday in Berlin without some unconventional, adult-only fun. Easter Berlin is the biggest leather and fetish event in Europe. Taking place each year over Easter, the meeting is organised by members of the BLF (Berlin Leather Fetish) club. Each year, thousands of leather, rubber, sportswear, skin and kinky-wear lovers from across the globe come together at Nollendorfplatz, to celebrate and explore their fetish in a safe and inclusive environment. There is the annual wild party, Snax Club, an all-male fetish party at Lab.oratory on Easter Saturday.
