1. Food Stalls on Soi Rambuttri

Located just off Khaosan Road, this is an alley that’s still very much a part of the Khaosan Road experience. However, recent attempts at beautification have changed the look and feel of the place. It is now one of the prettier places in Bangkok, with a significant street food presence. Noodle soup and fish cakes are a staple, but you can also get a variety of noodles and rice preparations – all of which are bursting with spices and flavors.

2. Food Court at Banglamphu

This place is a 10-minute walk from Khaosan Road, across a small bridge on Samsen Road. It is close to the Golden Palace, and a great place to sample the street food culture of Bangkok. While the food may be a bit spicier than the Western palate is used to, the taste of spices cooked fresh is exhilarating and eye-opening. Check out the stalls with a crowd – these are likely to have the best food.

Recovering from a binge drinking spree on the strip the evening before? You might want to sample the fare at Gecko Bar to help you get back on track. Looking for vegetarian or vegan food? Ethos Café, in the small lane behind Burger King at the eastern end of Khaosan Road, is the perfect stop-off. A wide range of vegan and vegetarian food combined with a variety of teas are served, all in a setting that would rival any upper-end cafe in Bangkok. The portions are huge, and two can easily be happy with just one order, making the price tag a welcome one.

5. Roti Mataba

While the street food in Banglamphu is pretty good, if you’re craving to try the Muslim flavors of Thailand, check out Roti Mataba. Matabas are essentially unleavened bread stuffed with a variety of fillings from banana to egg, chicken, fish or beef. Served with a small bowl of salad and sweet chili vinegar, these make an excellent breakfast or lunch-time snack.
