Chiang Mai‘s steadily growing health-food culture has not only revolutionized restaurants but also brought an exciting breakfast scene to the city. From creamy omelets to fresh fruits, smoothies and steaming coffees, we recommend you don’t skip the first meal of the day when visiting the city. Surrounded by historic monuments and cultural sights, numerous breakfast places in Chiang Mai’s old city are just waiting for you to get a bite of their quality fare. Here are five of the best.

Chiang Mai’s old city wall

Dada Kafe

The first thing that will impress you about Dada Kafe is how busy it is all the time, and for a good reason. Although many other establishments offer a ‘healthy’ approach to their food in Chiang Mai, at Dada you can also learn about the benefits of each food. They feature a hand-painted chalk board explaining all the nutritional benefits of the food they have on offer. All the items on the menu take healthy eating to a new level, and the friendly German owner is always there to offer help, guidance or simply to have a chat with customers. This is the perfect place to get some energy with a delicious meal in the morning, and they have a juice for every mood and occasion – from hangover cures to immune-system boosters.

Good morning Chiang Mai

Never has a place been more suited to waking up in a lazy and guilt-free fashion than Good Morning Chiang Mai. Tucked away in a street just off the central hub of Chiang Mai, once you get there you’ll find a jungle-like retreat with a peaceful and tranquil setting. They offer set breakfasts that include coffee and fruit options, and the menu has a good balance between Western and Thai food. The coffee is decent and locally brewed and the staff is friendly and contributes to the welcoming ambiance. Good Morning Chiang Mai is the best place to unwind after a heavy night, or the ideal place to go if you’ve just arrived in the city. You can even have a little dip in the mini swimming pool they have tucked in the corner.

Good morning Chiang Mai

Blue Diamond: The Breakfast Club

Some say Blue Diamond was the pioneer behind the now popular healthy eating scene in Chiang Mai. The menu is extensive so there will always be something to please everyone, and they even have gluten-free cakes, cookies and bread made on site. The produce is fresh and comes from the market located on the same street, and whilst Thai food makes up most of the menu, there are Western options too. The owners live and breathe healthy eating and well-being. Check out all the treats and delicacies they have on offer and feel free to ask them any questions about their foods. They sell many organic products, from natural mosquito sprays to fluffy muffins, warm from the oven.

Birds Nest

Birds Nest is as much an ethic cornerstone of Chiang Mai as it is a thoroughly good restaurant and a cool place to hangout. This restaurant is linked to Pun Pun – the other ethical restaurant group in the city – and both have been offering great organic food for a few years. Birds Nest is a warm, welcoming and quirky place. They offer sumptuous healthy and organic breakfasts and with their profits they contribute to worthwhile causes in the local community. They even have themed food nights, such as the Mediterranean night, where they offer outstanding buffet food at a very reasonable price – make sure to get their early because the events are popular. This is a great place to while away a Sunday morning playing one of the many board games they have lying around, or to simply kick-back and lie on the hammock with one of their fabulous fruit shakes.

Angel’s Secrets

This is another place that has done well to establish itself as a go-to place for amazing food and service in Chiang Mai over the last few years. Angel’s Secrets doesn’t try to be anything it’s not and it offers an unpretentious atmosphere, friendly staff and a setting enhanced by an abundance of plants that you brush past as you walk in. The emphasis here is on breakfast and it’s best to start with the oatmeal, which can be modified to accommodate your taste. The place has the ideal ambiance to kick back and enjoy a delicious cup of strong Arabic coffee, and they even make their own gelato. Don’t be afraid to talk to the staff, they’re always happy to tell customers about all the items on their menu.
