Travelling with kids might seem an especially daunting task when touring an overwhelming destination like India, but the land of colour and folk tales has a lot to offer families as well as solo travellers. Here are some fun activities you can enjoy in India with kids.

Enjoy Goa’s beaches

A day at the beach can never be boring, and Goa is a treasure trove of fun beach activities for families. Anjuna Beach has several flea markets, and nearly all commercial beaches offer boat rides and water activities. Alternatively, head towards Benaulim to escape the crowds and find excellent restaurants.

Spot tigers

India is the destination to see the royal beast. With more than 47 national reserves that are home to tigers, a safari vacation is an exciting opportunity for kids in India (one of many adventures, under parental supervision).

Camp in the desert and go on a camel safari

Camping out under the stars on a camel’s back after a safari in the Thar Desert is a must-have experience with kids in India. Note that while days are hot and humid, temperatures drop at night, so bring both light and warm clothing and carry a cool drink and sun protection for the kids.

Stay in a houseboat in the backwaters

Kerala’s network of backwater canals, lakes and rivers are scenic destinations, blanketed by lush palm trees and tropical magic and wrapped in enchanting, mesmerising charm. Cruising past villages, temples and other beautiful views in a houseboat is a floating hotel experience enjoyable and pleasant for both kids and adults.

Live with elephants at Dera Amer

Dera Amer, located behind Amer Fort, is a fun camp providing kids an opportunity to bathe elephants, paint their trunks, have a meal with them and trek on their backs. Dera Amer operates from September to mid-April to avoid monsoon season, an extremely pleasant experience during spring and winter seasons.

Explore colourful Rajasthan

A mesmerizing experience for anyone who visits India, Rajasthan – a collection of cities that hold a regal charm and grand castles – is the destination of colours, happiness, music, history and dance. See Jaipur (‘The Pink City’), Jodhpur (‘The Blue City’) and Udaipur (‘City of Lakes’) with floating palaces, each a captivating view for the kids.

Some tips for travelling with kids in India

Use public toilets only in established restaurants.
Don’t drink tap water, but always keep cool drinks on hand (dehydration and heat can be especially hard on children).
Ask for anything to accommodate children, such as particular food preparation. People are happy to help, so don’t be shy.
Ask your kids to keep an open mind towards the potentially overwhelming cultural differences.
