Hyderabad is famous for several things: its pearls, its skilled craftsmanship, its Nizams, its mosques and palaces, but most importantly, its biryani. Unlike other places in India, the raw rice and meat are cooked together with water and spices in an earthen pot, slowly and carefully. The diversity of the ingredients and the meticulous preparation is what gives Hyderabadi biryani its unique flavor and character. We pick the best places to taste this regional dish in Hyderabad.

Chicken Biryani

Tabla Restaurants

Tabla at Banjara Hills excels in the cuisine of the states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. They have a series of restaurants but the one at Banjara Hills is considered the best. The service is efficient, and whilst you’re waiting for the food you can sample their complimentary roasted papads. Their biryanis are delicious and quite spicy, so be prepared! They also offer home delivery.

Bawarchi

Bawarchi is often touted as Hyderabad’s finest biryani-serving restaurant and was opening by a biryani-loving actor, Sunil Shetty. Despite the popularity and the consequent waiting time, the service is exceptional and incredibly swift. Start with some of their delicious Mughlai starters – perhaps the kebabs – and then move on to the biryanis, which are very much worth the wait. Both the chicken and mutton biryanis are well known, and their kheer complements them perfectly as a dessert.

Hyderabadi Vegetable Biryani

Meridian Cafe and Restaurant

Although its exteriors are rather simple and unassuming, the biryani at this restaurant is a hit with the locals, particularly the dum biryani. This is a special kind of biryani that is wholly covered and cooked under steam, which allows the flavors of the spices to better dissipate. The accompanying raita and mirchi ka salan are authentic and taste delicious with the biryani. Portions are quite large, so come hungry!

Ulavacharu

A traditional restaurant showcasing the best of Andhra Pradesh cuisine, Ulavacharu is a must if you’re in the area. The menu is extremely long and has a large variety of authentic, spicy Andhra food. The vegetarian pulaos and biryanis are particularly flavorful, and there’s an extensive selection of biryani and other rice-based dishes.

Jewel of Nizam, the Golkonda Hotel

One of the most opulent restaurants in Hyderabad, the restaurant looks like a small palace and has palatially luxurious food to match. The details are beautifully executed, and there’s live music to add to its decadent ambiance. Their kachche gosht ki biryani (a mutton biryani) is particularly well-loved by locals. Come here for a special experience and enjoy dining among the portraits of the famous rulers of Hyderabad.
