City Book Center, Andheri

City Book Center has been at its Andheri location since 2004, after owner Pramod Bodale, like many of his counterparts, found himself evicted from his streetside stall in Fort by the city’s municipal corporation. Equipped with everything from study guides and textbooks to secondhand novels at incredibly low prices, City Book Center has something for everyone. Moreover, the store also functions as a library, allowing patrons to receive a refund of 30 percent of the book’s original cost if they return it after reading.

Kitab Khana, Fort

Strand Book Stall, Fort

A landmark store, Strand Book Stall was founded in 1949 in the Colaba area, moving to its current location in Fort in 1953. Past patrons of this store range from former Prime Ministers Jawaharlal Nehru and Vajpayee to business tycoons JRD Tata and Dhirubhai Ambani. After half a century, it remains one of the city’s best outlets, offering a great collection of books at affordable prices.

The New & Second Hand Book Shop, Kalbadevi

When founded in 1905, The New & Second Hand Book Shop only sold raddi paper (waste paper) but soon branched out to selling books, which it continues to do today.
