Lima claims to be the capital of Latin American gastronomy, and conversations about food are considered the universal Peruvian ice breaker. In fact, the amount of restaurants, markets, and food aficionados in Lima is indeed rather impressive. Luckily, with the expanding culinary offer, the city does include vegetarians in the never-ending feast. Here are some of the best vegetarian restaurants in Lima.

Deli Viva

Hidden in an unassuming building on Avenida La Mar, Deli Viva is a tiny place specialising in ultra-healthy, raw cuisine. Run by a Swedish couple, it offers a selection of delicious vegan specialties, prepared with no sugar, gluten or preservatives. Deli Viva serves daily lunch menus, choosing a different country as an inspiration every day. The sets vary from sushi and American hamburgers to Italian pizzas and pad thai. One of the most popular is, not surprisingly, the Peruvian menu, redone creatively to replace fish and meat (so you may be treated with mushroom ceviche or grains with Huacatay salsa, to give you a little preview). Next door, there is an organic grocery store, Punto Orgánico, where you can stock up on healthy snacks to nibble until your next visit.

El AlmaZen

Deli, Healthy

A few steps away from the hustle and bustle of Miraflores stands a turquoise colonial mansion, housing a legend among Lima’s vegetarian restaurants. El AlmaZen, although a bit pricey, offers its guests top-notch cuisine in a lovely setting. The interior is bright and spacious, and the service attentive and chatty. The menu changes depending on the availability of products and creativity of the chef. The results are impressive. Inventive dishes combine international inspirations, Peruvian traditions and local ingredients, a starter consisting solely of multiple varieties of potatoes is just one of many examples. Upstairs, there is also a well-stocked deli and a little café to relax over a cup of tea and some yummy organic desserts.

Raw Café Club

The tiny Raw Café Club gets crowded easily, but don’t be discouraged, food that awaits you there is worth all the trouble. Following the philosophy of raw vegan cuisine, the chefs of the Raw Cafe Club serve whimsical, super-healthy dishes. One of their most popular staples is ‘alive pizza’ with the dough made of mix of grains. Beetroot burgers are another classic. What makes this place even more inviting, however, are their desserts. Cheesecakes, cookies, brownies and Peruvian fruit mousse, all of them prepared according to the strict rules, will win you over in no time.
