Peru has a long history when it comes to the harder end of the musical spectrum. To this day, there are countless bars across capital city Lima dedicated to punk, hardcore and metal music. Here are some of the best.

Bar Hensley, Barranco

Situated on the main strip down to the tourist haven of Barranco, this is a great spot to drop into. There is regular live music and cheap beer, plus it’s open super late.

La Guitarra, Ate

A little outside town, this place hosts regular live events. It’s a taxi ride away from the tourist areas of Miraflores and Barranco, but it’s well worth the trip.

Bar Hensley, Monterrico

The second Hensley is found in the southeast of the city. It’s slightly larger than the Barranco bar and plays host to bigger events.

Crypto Bar Metal

For real metal fans this place is heaven. Located near the center of Lima and easily accessible, the music is hard and the beer is very cheap indeed. After-parties going strong until dawn are often to be found here. http://instagram.com/p/BZP4kAAhHxb/?taken-at=8134162

Nuclear Bar

Open since 2005, this rock bar has become a stalwart of the metal scene in the center of Lima. Make sure to take a taxi home because the location is slightly undesirable. It’s more expensive to drink here than most of the other bars on the list, but check out the list of gigs to see if something grabs your attention.

Yield Rock

For classic metal and rock sounds, Yield Rock is the place to be. The focus is on crowd-pleasing classics rather than groundbreaking music, but it’s good fun. Be aware that the line for the toilets can be painfully long, so plan in advance.

Vichama Rock Bar

This bar faces Plaza San Martin, a focal point for the punk and metal scene in Peru. Things get lively, it’s open late, but make sure you take a taxi home because the surrounding area isn’t the most salubrious.
