While favelas may receive a bad press in international news, not all are dangerous, poverty-stricken areas. Attempts have been made to rename favelas ‘communities’ to change the perspective towards them and help visitors see their growing cultural scene. Although not every favela is safe, some in the south zone of Rio are and tourists can experience a different side to Rio by staying in one of the hostels located there.

Like its name suggests, the Babilonia Rio Hostel is located in Babilônia, a small favela in Leme that is considered one of the safest in the city.

The local owners at Vidigalhouse Hostel create a warm and comfortable setting at this friendly hostel in Vidigal. Located at the top, the views are sensational and a great place to sit back and watch an unforgettable sunset. The steep hills going up may be challenging for some, but the abundance of taxis will deliver you to the hostel door for just a couple of reais. The rooms are comfortable and clean with air-conditioning, a feature that anyone in Rio during the summer will appreciate.
