Melbourne Neighbourhood In Focus: Richmond

Monique La Terra

Three kilometers southeast of Melbourne’s CBD lies a suburb synonymous with sport and shopping. Home to the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Bridge Road, and Little Saigon, Richmond is a culmination of all-things-Melbourne. Every weekend bargain hunters head to the factory outlets while sports fans can watch AFL in the winter or a game of Cricket in the summer, and foodies indulge in a plethora of cafes including the locally thriving Vietnamese scene.

No matter what your interests are, Richmond has something for you. Fashionistas can shop up a storm on Bridge Road where there’s always a bargain to snatch and a new boutique to discover. From fashion outlets to furniture shops, a visit to Bridge Road may put a sizeable dent in your bank account. If all that shopping has made you thirsty, then head to Mountain Goat Brewery where you can sample quality ale on Wednesday and Friday nights. Richmond is also home to some of Melbourne’s most impressive street art as well as one of the city’s most beloved music venues, The Corner Hotel, which serves up pub grub alongside classic rock. Richmond is also home to the MCG where footy fans can enjoy a game at the largest stadium in the southern hemisphere.

You’ll never go hungry in Richmond with plenty of cafes and restaurants to choose from. If you’re after a coffee then we recommend Top Paddock who pair their Five Senses coffee with a robust selection of dishes. If it’s cheese you’re after then head to Richmond Hill Café and Larder, who have their own cheese room and even a cheese club. For all-day breakfast try Reunion & Co. Café or Short Black Cafe who open their doors bright and early at 6am. Visit Pillar of Salt for a trendy take on a casual café or if you’re after an artsy, laid back vibe try Friends of Mine. Guilt free desserts are on offer at LSX Café. Meanwhile, Feast of Merit offers a rooftop bar and scrumptious Middle Eastern crumpets. Richmond is also home to Melbourne’s Little Saigon so if you’re craving Vietnamese food then take a stroll to Victoria Street.

Connect with like-minded people on our premium trips curated by local insiders and with care for the world

Since you are here, we would like to share our vision for the future of travel - and the direction Culture Trip is moving in.

Culture Trip launched in 2011 with a simple yet passionate mission: to inspire people to go beyond their boundaries and experience what makes a place, its people and its culture special and meaningful — and this is still in our DNA today. We are proud that, for more than a decade, millions like you have trusted our award-winning recommendations by people who deeply understand what makes certain places and communities so special.

Increasingly we believe the world needs more meaningful, real-life connections between curious travellers keen to explore the world in a more responsible way. That is why we have intensively curated a collection of premium small-group trips as an invitation to meet and connect with new, like-minded people for once-in-a-lifetime experiences in three categories: Culture Trips, Rail Trips and Private Trips. Our Trips are suitable for both solo travelers, couples and friends who want to explore the world together.

Culture Trips are deeply immersive 5 to 16 days itineraries, that combine authentic local experiences, exciting activities and 4-5* accommodation to look forward to at the end of each day. Our Rail Trips are our most planet-friendly itineraries that invite you to take the scenic route, relax whilst getting under the skin of a destination. Our Private Trips are fully tailored itineraries, curated by our Travel Experts specifically for you, your friends or your family.

We know that many of you worry about the environmental impact of travel and are looking for ways of expanding horizons in ways that do minimal harm - and may even bring benefits. We are committed to go as far as possible in curating our trips with care for the planet. That is why all of our trips are flightless in destination, fully carbon offset - and we have ambitious plans to be net zero in the very near future.
