Despite being the most isolated city of its size in the world, Perth is also one of the most beautiful. With near-permanent blue skies and endless dry heat, the capital of Western Australia (WA) is a gateway to remarkable beaches, the quokkas of Rottnest Island and national parks. The city itself has become a cultural hotspot of late, primed for foodies and art lovers, and it has a buzzing hotel scene, too. Here’s our pick of the best.

The Ritz-Carlton, Perth

Hotel, Luxury

Cutting a striking silhouette above the rejuvenated Elizabeth Quay, the Ritz-Carlton, Perth boasts sweeping views over the Swan River – best seen from the outdoor heated infinity pool. The first Australian outpost for the Ritz-Carlton brand has suitably luxe rooms, with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Perth skyline, rainfall showers and standalone deep soak tubs. When you can pull yourself away, make a beeline for the in-house Hearth Restaurant to dine on WA food and wine.

Duxton Hotel Perth

On the eastern end of the business district, Duxton Hotel Perth is perfectly placed for exploring the WA capital. It offers a variety of refurbished deluxe rooms, along with superiors and suites. Downstairs, make a reservation at Firewater Grille to dine on Australian oysters, Cone Bay barramundi and local steaks from WA’s Treeton Farm. Swim in the rooftop pool, or hire bikes to tour the city.

Aloft Perth

Hotel

Conceived by the same team behind Marriott’s W hotels, its influence is instantly apparent in Aloft Perth. Bright, geometric prints decorate pillows and chairs, high ceilings allow for an abundance of natural light, and local art adorns the walls. Rooms are more muted, some with freestanding tubs. Springs Kitchen, the bustling in-house restaurant, is well worth a gander – its chilli eggs were voted one of the best breakfasts in Perth.

QT Perth

Hotel

With a moody palette seeking to represent WA’s rich mining history and rooms lined with local jarrah floorboards, art deco influences and cockatoo wallpaper, QT Perth is a design-led gem. Towering cacti adorn the lobby, a further nod to its setting. Bookings are essential at the multi-award-winning Santini Grill, the hotel’s teal-and-terracotta-hued restaurant where elevated Italian dishes, such as Abrolhos Island octopus and suckling pig, pepper the menu.

Ingot Hotel

Hotel

Just a short walk from the famed Ascot Racecourse, Ingot Hotel is in a prime position for exploring all the joys of the city. When you’re not out for a wander, there’s a large outdoor pool to cool off in (and a hot tub if it’s a bit chilly). Its 214 guest rooms are modern, with warm tones and wooden fixtures. When you get a bit parched, there’s a fantastic selection of local wines and boutique beers to sample at Eyre Restaurant, too.

Alex Hotel

Hotel

With its location between the bustling bars of William Street and the Perth Cultural Centre, Alex Hotel is an excellent base for discovering Perth on foot. The brainchild of the team behind the popular Fremantle microbrewery Little Creatures, it’s understandably stocked with local craft ales and Margaret River wines. The vibe is fun, with rooms featuring shades of dusty rose and common areas boasting vibrant velvet-clad sofas. On cooler days, head to the roof terrace to try and spot that elusive green flash at sunset.

Pensione Hotel Perth

Hotel

Set just a short walk from Kings Park, where there are 400ha (988 acres) of native bushland to explore, Pensione Hotel Perth is the best of both worlds. With the CBD on its doorstep, the hotel is housed within a 1960s modernist building – and the interiors take influence from the façade’s era. Expect original, fully restored ’60s furniture and decor in the common areas, while the monochromatic rooms will bring you straight back to the present.

Mantra on Murray Perth

Hotel

Just a short walk from public transportation and the Western Australian Museum, Mantra on Murray Perth is in the very heart of the city. Each of the expansive studio-style rooms and suites comes with a fully equipped kitchenette. The in-house Society Bar & Kitchen offers an elevated modern Australian menu – think caramelised pork belly burgers or banana bread for those with a sweet tooth.

Tribe Perth Kings Park

Hotel

With a jet-black gleaming glass façade, Tribe is a sleek addition to Perth’s hotel radar. Inside, the modern-luxe feel continues with sink-in velvet chairs, statement furniture and an array of neon lighting. Rooms are compact but smart, with floor-to-ceiling windows giving the illusion of more space. Communal areas are stacked with hardcover books, and for those who want to explore, there are free-to-use retro-style bikes on hand, too.

Nightcap at Belgian Beer Cafe

Hotel

An Australian take on the classic pub with rooms, Nightcap at Belgian Beer Cafe is a minimalist haven. Rooms are unfussy, with plenty of natural light, but it’s the cafe downstairs that is the real draw here. Quintessentially Belgian, everything – the decor, food and (of course) the beer – is a nod to its Flemish influences. Schnitzel and bratwurst line the menu, best washed down with one of the Belgian or Western Australian beers on tap.
