Bowen is a small town that will make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. It’s all about the great outdoors here – visit underwater sculptures, take snaps of local murals and join the walk to the North Head Lighthouse, made when the tide gets so low that you can cross the bay towards it. Looking for a practical pit stop? Choose the Ocean View Hotel – set on 3.6ha (nine acres) of land overlooking the ocean. Eight pristine beaches are within a 10-minute drive. Twin, double and king-sized rooms are available and there’s a family room complete with bunk beds. Rooms have kitchen facilities – but home-cooked meals can also be delivered to your door.

3. Bluewater Harbour Motel, for sun and shade
