The Char

Restaurant, Steakhouse

The Char has been a staple of Beckley’s dining scene for the past 45 years, ever since Ann Lorenz and her son Billy Browskey built it up before it moved to its current location on Char Drive. The Char’s menu focuses mostly on classic steak and seafood dishes and other American favorites, including appetizers like shrimp cocktail and fried oysters and entrees like filet mignon and crab cakes, which are sure to please even the pickiest of eaters in your party. Be sure to get a table with a view of the pond in spring or summertime, which makes for a particularly special experience.

Padrino's Ristorante Italiano

Restaurant, Italian

Though Padrino’s may not seem like much at first glance (it’s located in a strip mall and is fairly unassuming overall), don’t be fooled by its humble exterior; it’s the real deal when it comes to authentic Italian food. Be sure not to overlook their subs, especially the Philly sub, which is as close as you can get to a Philly cheesesteak in West Virginia, and while you’re there, appreciate the simplicity and fresh quality of their food. Though Padrino’s isn’t the finest of dining experiences, it’ll sate your Italian cravings and you’ll enjoy your meal.

Campestre Mexican Grill

Restaurant, Mexican

Campestre Mexican Grill is the best spot in West Virginia to grab delicious, zesty Tex-Mex cuisine, and their goal is to serve fresh and authentic Mexican food to the good people of Beckley. Enjoy Mexican-inspired appetizers like loaded spicy potato skins and entrees like enchiladas and burritos. They also bring complementary chips, salsa and ‘white dip’ to your table as soon as you sit down, so you don’t even need to choose a menu item before you get to taste their delectable cuisine. The portions are generous and the prices are excellent, and be sure to stop by Campestre’s second location in Princeton if you’re ever visiting.

Dobras Zupas

Restaurant, Fusion

Beckley’s first local brewery, Dobras Zupas (which means ‘good soup’ in Slovenian and pays homage to the owners roots in Slovenia), aims to serve fresh and gourmet food from an evolving menu that changes based on customers’ appetites or the local ingredients available at the time. Though you may not be able to have a favorite dish at Dobras Zupas because of the constantly changing menu, you’re sure to always find an item you love that’s in line with their standards and consistently high-quality dishes. Dobras Zupas serves as a craft brewery as well, and pride themselves on being the sole craft brewery in Southern West Virginia.

King Tut Drive-In

Snack Bar, American

King Tut Drive-In is your standard drive-in, but with particularly excellent menu items and lots of quirky, creative twists to keep their guests full and happy at all times. Their menu, which includes everything from sandwiches to pizzas to full dinners, is quite extensive, but each dish is prepared with extraordinary care and expertise, and be sure to try their more unique offerings like their pizza burgers. Grab a milkshake while you’re there as well, as they’re said to be especially delectable and perfect for satisfying your sweet tooth.

Dickey's Barbecue Pit

Restaurant, BBQ

Though this restaurant group is based in Texas, is there a better place to find classic, spicy BBQ than a Texas rib joint? Dickey’s Barbecue Pit offers up classic sausages, ribs and other BBQ staples to hungry crowds; they’ve done so for years and don’t plan to stop any time soon. If you’ve got a large group or a big family to feed, Dickey’s is certainly the place, as you can order a large platter that will make absolutely everybody happy. Be sure to try the brisket, and order one of every side so you can sample each one.

Young Chow's

Restaurant, Chinese

If you’re looking for a classic Chinese takeout spot, Young Chow’s is a perfect go-to. Offering a combination of sushi and Chinese food in one place, Young Chow’s has something for everybody, and with its extensive menu, you can try any sort of Asian cuisine you’ve been craving. Popular dishes include the pineapple chicken and the hot and sour soup, plus, they bring a complimentary spicy cabbage appetizer to each table so you can enjoy a snack before you dig into your Asian-inspired feast. The dining room is spacious and family-friendly, so bring the kids and enjoy delicious food in the company of your favorite people.
