Locals call Ashland The Centre of The Universe, which might sound arrogant, until you consider its location bang in the heart of Virginia, on the Route 1 highway. The town evolved from a small mineral springs resort in the late 1840s, and grew with the arrival of the Randolph Macon College in 1868. Today, it’s home to the Ashland Museum, Kings Dominion Theme Park and James River Cellars winery. Check into one of these top hotels in Ashland and explore it all – bookable via Culture Trip.
Less than a mile from the historic town centre, and 25 minutes out of the state capital Richmond, this Hilton inn is a reliable rest stop. Rooms are kitted out with smart minimalist furnishings, as well as free hot breakfast and onsite parking included. After a day exploring Richmond or screaming on all the rides at Kings Dominion, unwind with a dip in the outdoor pool. There’s a gym onsite too, so you can keep your fitness regime going on vacay.
Hilton’s Tapestry Collection is made up of independent hotels chosen for their style and independent spirit, and Virginia Crossings has both in spades. Located on the site of the Civil War’s Battle of the Yellow Tavern, the AAA Four Diamond-rated resort has a sense of old-world grandeur, with its bombastic colonial-style architecture, set against a backdrop of English gardens. It’s a great choice for active travelers, with its own golf course, basketball and volleyball courts, as well as a gym and outdoor pool.
Just outside Ashland proper, this Marriott is right next to the airport and a 10-minute drive from Kings Dominion, so it’s equally good for family holidays and early morning flights. Wine lovers will enjoy a trip to the nearby James River winery for tastings ‒ as well as good local wines stocked by the hotel’s own bar. Those with kids should book a suite – these come with a pull-out sofa bed as standard.
Sister inn to Fairfield, this is another convenient pitstop on the outskirts of Ashland. Rooms are clean and comfortable, and come with pillowtop mattresses, free wifi, and flat-screen TVs with HBO. All the essentials are present ‒ complimentary breakfast and lobby coffee, fitness and business centers, and a 24-hour snack shop ‒ and service comes with a smile. If you’re looking for something special, hit up the Center of the Universe Brewing Company, half a mile away, for microbrew tastings in the taproom and beer garden.
Part of Hilton’s youthful Tru brand, this hotel is fun for all the family. Start your day off with free breakfast in the lobby ‒ eggs, waffles and bagels as well as coffee, juice and cereal. Then set out on a day of adventure locally: the hotel’s within 10 minutes of Kings Dominion and Meadow Event Park, home of the Virginia State Fair. Back at base, hit the gym, hang out with pooch in one of the dog-friendly rooms (for a fee) or challenge your friends in the games room.

Since you are here, we would like to share our vision for the future of travel - and the direction Culture Trip is moving in.
Culture Trip launched in 2011 with a simple yet passionate mission: to inspire people to go beyond their boundaries and experience what makes a place, its people and its culture special and meaningful — and this is still in our DNA today. We are proud that, for more than a decade, millions like you have trusted our award-winning recommendations by people who deeply understand what makes certain places and communities so special.
Increasingly we believe the world needs more meaningful, real-life connections between curious travellers keen to explore the world in a more responsible way. That is why we have intensively curated a collection of premium small-group trips as an invitation to meet and connect with new, like-minded people for once-in-a-lifetime experiences in three categories: Culture Trips, Rail Trips and Private Trips. Our Trips are suitable for both solo travelers, couples and friends who want to explore the world together.
Culture Trips are deeply immersive 5 to 16 days itineraries, that combine authentic local experiences, exciting activities and 4-5* accommodation to look forward to at the end of each day. Our Rail Trips are our most planet-friendly itineraries that invite you to take the scenic route, relax whilst getting under the skin of a destination. Our Private Trips are fully tailored itineraries, curated by our Travel Experts specifically for you, your friends or your family.
We know that many of you worry about the environmental impact of travel and are looking for ways of expanding horizons in ways that do minimal harm - and may even bring benefits. We are committed to go as far as possible in curating our trips with care for the planet. That is why all of our trips are flightless in destination, fully carbon offset - and we have ambitious plans to be net zero in the very near future.
