Houston is one of the liveliest cities in Texas, and it’s bar scene is equally invigorating. With plenty of uptown venues, which run the gamut from upscale cocktail bars to honky tonk music halls, we list the best places in uptown Houston for a great afternoon drink or night out.

Bar 12

At first, it might seem strange to have a bar within a department store. However, after a day of shopping, it makes a lot of sense. Forget your achy feet at Bar 12, located at the top floor of Saks Fifth Avenue. The bar is as stylish as the store, with sophisticated mixed drinks. The menu is also surprisingly well-rounded, with everything from shrimp cocktails to a bacon cheeseburger provided by 51fifteen, the in-store restaurant downstairs.

The Tasting Room

The Tasting Room is a lovely wine bar with a long wine list, an open patio and live music. The patio is breezy, relaxing and downright delightful, while the interior is elegant, modern and cozy. The food is out of this world; savory pork sausage, crispy pizza, tender steak. The long opening hours make this a great place to have brunch or lunch and enjoy delicious mimosas or other wine-based cocktails later in the day.

Muldoon’s the Patio

Muldoon’s is a friendly neighborhood bar for a relaxed drink. Sit under some of the oldest trees in the region while enjoying a gorgeous view. It’s a true respite from the busy Houston bustle and the sometimes oppressive heat. Friendly service and a cozy indoor bar add to the appeal. .

The Deck on Fountainview

The food specials. That’s really the best reason to visit The Deck on Fountainview but you’ll also be delighted with the attentive service, affordable prices and fun crowd. It’s a sports bar, so dress casually and expect TV screens and football fans. Review their online events calendar to see if they’ll be showing a specific game or event. The crawfish is sold by the pound and the fries are made to order. The deck can also be reserved for events.

Prohibition

While it might sound strange at first, this is a bar and burlesque theater you’ll want to bring everyone to. Beautiful chandeliers, elegant wrought iron staircase railings and cozy seating set the ambience for an intimate night out that will delight every one of your senses. Seats are appropriately spread around so that everyone gets a great view of the stage, which hosts burlesque acts, aerial performers, jugglers and all sorts of other entertainers.

The Concert Pub

This is mainly a sports bar, but with a musical twist, as it’s a music venue as well. They host local cover and tribute bands and a live DJ on weekends, as well as happy hours, crawfish boils and steak nights; check the website for listings and dates. Shuffleboard, pool, air hockey and foosball provide even more entertainment. The food menu consists of well-selected Houston classics and traditional bar food.

Revolve Kitchen + Bar

Housed within Houston’s Hotel Derek is Revolve, a great place for a quick but satisfying meal and a great drink. The space is chic but laid-back in its attitude, with a well-lit wraparound bar, welcoming service and a pool table. To add to the draw, the food is also excellently cooked and presented.

Jake’s Sports Bar

A well-stocked and ever-changing wine and beer list and a wide Philly cheesesteak selection make Jake’s a sports bar with an upscale twist. The menu is impressively large, yet everything is cooked to perfection using fresh ingredients by experienced chefs.

Ron’s Pub

Ron’s Pub has an excellent beer and wine selection, plenty of dartboards and the friendliest service in town. It’s a British-style neighborhood pub with a quiet, calm environment where patrons can have a beer and enjoy a conversation. Apart from draft beer, there’s a full bar and they show key soccer, golf, football and basketball events on TV screens, as well as holding tailgate parties in their spacious parking lot.
