The sun has set, work is done and the kids are in bed. It’s time to let your hair down in ‘America’s Finest City’. Culture Trip’s local insiders have suggested the best things to do at night in San Diego, including the top watering holes and the sunset spots you can’t miss.

Belly Up Tavern

Music Venue

Get your jive on at Belly Up Tavern where live music plays all week. It’s more of a bar than a live music venue so expect chilled vibes with lots of tables to relax at, if you don’t fancy busting your best moves on the dance floor that is. Make a night of it and grab a meal beforehand at sister restaurant Wild Note Cafe (next door) and party the night away in Solana Beach. Recommended by local insider Lauren Rogers

Realm of 52 Remedies

Cocktail Bar, Cocktails

Don 1920s attire and head to this speakeasy-style secret bar in Kearny Mesa. It’s not typically touristy which adds to the authenticity. Booking in advance is a must. Enter Common Theory and look for the white door. On entering you’ll be dazzled by the interiors and overwhelmed by the drinks menu. Divine cocktails are whisked up by expert bar staff so all you have to do is drink up and relax. The menu consists of light bites so if you’re hungry grab something before you go. Bonfire at Mission Beach

Natural Feature

Stretching along the coastline of San Diego, Mission Beach is sun, sea, sand and everything you want from a trip to the seaside. The boardwalk connects to Pacific Beach if you’re inclined towards a longer walk. Sunsets here are remarkable so head at the right time for those orange and golden skylines. In the summer months fire pits are laid out on a first-come, first-served basis so get there early to toast your marshmallows and watch the sunset over the ocean. Brewery tour

Brewery

Although not famously known for its local ale, San Diego boasts several brewhouses creating the tipple. Tour with an expert guide who will take you to different breweries ensuring your travels are as smooth as your drink. There’s an option to include food to soak up the beer – a mighty good idea if you have other plans in the city afterwards. Recommended by local insider Hebah Bukhari

Sunset Kayak Tour La Jolla

La Jolla is a beachside haven for surfers and folk looking to chill-out. Take a sunset kayak tour to La Jolla’s sea caves to experience the unique natural surroundings up close. A tour guide will lead you safely along the shore and point out the best spots. Finish the tour off in style with front row seats for the sunset . Recommended by local insider Hebah Bukhari
