Locals looking for a taste of the South in Portland know to head to Pine State Biscuits where warm biscuits are served daily in a variety of ways. Established in 2006 at the Portland Farmer’s Market, Walt Alexander, Kevin Atchley and Brian Snyder opened their first brick and mortar place in 2008, and with its popularity growing they established a second location. They use only the freshest locally sourced ingredients possible in their breakfast and lunch dishes, which include biscuit sandwiches, biscuits and gravy, and other specialities like blueberry cornmeal pancakes. Highlights to note are the Reggie with fried chicken, bacon, and cheese sandwiched in a biscuit topped with gravy and the vegetarian biscuits and gravy with shitake mushroom sauce. With delicious food and a friendly and cosy atmosphere, it’s easy to see why diners return again and again to this gem.

Opened by Chef John Gorham, Tasty n Sons offers brunch lovers a chance to savour their favourite meal any day of the week. In a comfortable and warm atmosphere, this family-style restaurant features an extensive menu of creative American fare that changes every day to reflect the freshest in-season products that are available. From smaller plates to bigger plates, some recent highlights include chocolate potato doughnuts with crème anglaise; fried egg and cheddar biscuit with a choice of sausage, house-cured bacon, or fried chicken; and the Moroccan chicken hash with harissa cream and egg. With a changing menu, many bubbly drinks, plus five different blood marys, diners can experience a different experience every time they visit this delicious restaurant.

Located in North Portland, Sweedeedee is a cute little café is a real delight serving American cuisine in a laid back atmosphere. The menu features tasty dishes, such as granola, oatmeal, a breakfast burrito with or without bacon, plus a variety of soups, salads, and sandwiches all made from the best locally sourced ingredients available. Any diner visiting must leave room for the tempting sweet treats available, including a piece of mouth-watering pie. Featuring an all butter crust, pies to try include apple, cherry, marion berry, and salted honey to name a few.

5. Rae's Lakeview Lounge

Rae’s Lakeview Lounge is a neighbourhood gem located in the Montgomery Park area. While there is no lake, the laid back vibe and delicious drinks and food, which includes a weekend brunch, more than makes up for the lack of a view. With cosy booth and banquet seating inside and a beautiful patio outside, diners will be able to relax while savouring American cuisine made from scratch. Brunch choices on the menu include french toast served with house blackberry sauce and sweetened crème fraîche and the steak Benedict on house made biscuits with hollandaise sauce. Featured in the comedy show Portlandia and Bon Appétit magazine, The Waffle Window is a small casual restaurant with two locations. Inspired by the popular European street food known as Liège waffles, this delicious spot serves up savoury and sweet Liège-style waffles with Portland flair. A great place for brunch, diners order via a window where they can take their order to go, sit inside or outside. Scrumptious waffles to note are the spicy bacon cheddar jalapeño waffle served with avocado-tomatillo salsa and the blueberry cheesecake waffle with blueberry compote, cheesecake pudding, freshly whipped cream, and graham cracker crumbles. With several vegetarian options, a variety of foodies will leave feeling satisfied.

Opened by Chef Naomi Pomeroy who was recently named the best chef in the Northwest by the James Beard Foundation, Beast is a delectable farm-to-table restaurant. Offering brunch on Sundays only, the four course menu changes each week to reflect the freshest ingredients found at the market the previous day. Past menu options have included brown butter crêpes with maple bourbon caramel, hazelnuts, and bacon; a short-rib, wild onion, and morel hash; a cheese plate; and chocolate truffle cake. Foodies will not only find satisfaction in the exquisite fare, but with communal seating, they may also make new friends.

Owned by David and Nicole Mouton, Screen Door is a comfortable and spacious restaurant specialising in Southern cuisine with a Pacific Northwest twist. Focused on creating flavourful dishes with locally sourced and organic ingredients, this restaurant serves a weekend brunch. Delectable choices from the brunch menu include the fried chicken and waffles, which is a house specialty item popular with the brunch crowd, and the garden grits with cheddar grits, mushrooms, spinach, caramelised onions, and provolone. Egg scrambles, eggs benedicts, plus pancakes, waffles, and french toast are also available. Blossoming Lotus is a cosy restaurant located in the Irvington District specialising in vegan cuisine. Using organic and sustainable ingredients, this eatery is inspired by the world’s cuisines and infuses international flavours into each dish. They serve lunch, dinner, plus a delectable weekend brunch with many gluten-free, soy-free, and raw options. Menu highlights include zucchini bread, French toast with orange-molasses butter and organic maple syrup; the asparagus omelette, which is a tofu based omelette with asparagus, cashew cream cheese, potato, and tomato; and the breakfast parfait made with layers of buckwheat granola, fresh fruit, and vanilla cashew parfait cream. They also have a full bar in which several tasty brunch cocktails are available.
