The former agricultural center on the banks of the Tar River had a complete makeover when the tobacco businesses made way for health and education centers. The area around Greenville is still farmland, though, which means good farmers’ markets where residents pick over the organic produce when they’re not growing their own in the community gardens. Here’s our pick of the best hotels in Greenville, North Carolina, all of which make a good base for exploring the historic houses, the Greenville Museum of Art, and the gently flowing river or for enjoying the vibrant college nightlife – all bookable on Culture Trip.

1. Hilton Greenville, for shopping access

A stone’s throw from the Greenville North Carolina Convention Center and surrounding shopping malls, this hotel is home to a great restaurant – Villedge – serving woodfired, Southern-inspired dishes: think Kentucky Bourbon chicken with a New Orleans twist, or Cajun shrimp risotto. Retire from the lively bar to your comfortable, cream-and-gray room and the next morning, a leisurely continental breakfast on the patio and a few rejuvenating laps in the pool will have you ready for the day. When the sun sets, cocktails around the firepit are the way to de-stress.

2. Courtyard by Marriott Greenville, for a tranquil setting

Across the street from Greenville’s medical district, and less than 10 minutes’ drive from the restaurants of Uptown, this oasis of tranquility seems to be geared towards quality rest. Like the thicket of pine trees out back, the plants in the garden outside the indoor pool have a calming presence that complements the neutral colors of the almost spa-like decor. For sustenance, the on-site bistro serves signature breakfast sandwiches, as well as pizza, burgers and light bites: dine under the outdoor pergola or next to the firepit for that getting-away-from-it-all vacation feeling.

3. Hampton Inn Greenville, for proximity to shopping malls

Across the street from the Greenville North Carolina Convention Center, this hotel in Greenville is just a five-minute drive from Greenville Mall and mere steps away from Walmart and a Target, just in case you’re in the mood for lightening your wallet. Rooms come in sedate off-white shades, with crimson sofas in some. Complimentary hot breakfast is included, and the hotel is walkable to popular chains such as Hook & Reel (Cajun), Plaza Azteca (Mexican) and Hooters. End your day out in Greenville with drinks on the patio.

If it’s time for your older ones to fly the coop, you probably want to tour the campus with them and help them settle in. This Greenville hotel makes the perfect base: your younger kids can stay and eat for free, so you can bring the whole family – and bring them again for the big Pirates game. Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium and the main campus of East Carolina University are minutes away by car and along the way to the residence hall, there are plenty of places to stop for those last-minute supplies.

You’re just a 10-minute drive from the Greenville Museum of Art and Uptown’s cluster of restaurants that includes the popular Pitt Street Brewing Co and Jack Brown’s Beer and Burger Joint. After a day out on the town, come home to a wagging tail here in one of the few pet-friendly hotels in Greenville. There are open fields and wooded areas nearby so you can take your pup for a quick walk.

Whether you’re visiting kids who are studying at the ECU Brody School of Medicine or just pausing for an overnighter and a spot of sightseeing, staying here means you start your day with complimentary full American breakfast. Then you either walk across the street to reach the campus or drive for less than 10 minutes to reach the Greenville Museum of Art. After work, you come back to your furry friend waiting in your pet-friendly, fully-equipped suite. You go for a walk: maybe the Lake Laupus trail from the hotel. If you don’t feel like cooking, pick up a sandwich from Jimmy John’s across the street. After dinner, you go for a swim or a workout in the fitness center. Then you have a drink around the firepit with fellow guests before curling up for the night.

Close enough to Uptown and the college bars that your Uber after a night out won’t cost you a fortune, but a far enough distance to guarantee a good night’s rest away from the noise: when it comes to Greenville hotels, this is the kind of central location you want. When you’ve overdone it and need a low-key day, a float in the heated indoor pool will energize you enough to go grab something greasy and recuperative from one of the many fast-food joints just down the street.
